sumner4991 wrote: I can certainly see Wes' point. If your dogs are on my land, then I would consider that trespassing. The hunter should be held responsible for the actions his hunting dogs. Is that not the case?
Sure ... in the original post, I never addressed the problem some folks have with bad dog hunters ... only the reason dog-hunting grew to be tradition in the South.
Believe me, I doubt Wes has had any problems with dog hunters that I haven't had. As I've stated, I've dealt with the worst of the worst of them, many times.
I believe dog hunters must take every reasonable precaution to prevent their dogs from running onto posted land.
That said, around here most everyone understands that dogs don't read signs or understand about "private land". If dog hunters do their best to keep dogs off of posted land, but the dogs get past and run onto forbidden property, then I don't consider that trespassing, and I don't have any problem at all with hunters "catching up" their dogs.
In fact, NC law protects the rights of dog-hunters to collect their dogs from private land. If the landowner chooses to make an issue out of this necessity, then wildlife officers or other lawmen will accompany the hunters.
Very few people in these parts mind dog hunters catching up hounds on posted land, so long as the run wasn't intentional. Making a big deal about hunters catching up hounds that got past is considered very poor form in this area. I trust you're not that way.
Of course the situation is subject to abuse. The problem is made worse by people who own 20 acres next to 5,000 and expect dog-hunters to refrain from hunting the big-block just because their hobby farm adjoins.
I think reason, cooperation and generosity of spirit should prevail.

I do not own hunting hounds, and I do not hunt that way myself ... but I know many who do, and I try to be sensible in working with them.
For instance:
My farm adjoins another that contains a 200 acre strip of brushy woods that is open on three sides ... perfect for dog hunting. My place is just across a 60 acre field from that strip, and adjoins another 250 acre block of woods, so naturally jumped deer often run onto my place when the hounds are let out.
Everyone around here knows I only allow limited hound hunting on this farm ... but everyone also knows they're perfectly welcome to catch up their hounds at any time, whether I'm around or not ... so long as there's no funny business. Why would I do otherwise?
Again:
I hunt with bows and guns from the ground, and don't hunt much anywhere else, so I only allow limited dog hunting on this farm ... but about 40 acres of this farm is part of a 250 acre woods block to the east of us. This block is open on four sides ... beyond perfect for dog hunting ... but in order for the place to be properly hunted, my woods must be involved.
Because only part of that woods is mine, I don't presume to prevent all dog hunting on that block just because I own a piece. Instead, it's well known that twice a year, I invite local dog hunters to run that block and make free use of my fields while they do it. Why wouldn't I?
I try to treat others with consideration. It's the "me, me" and "mine, mine" attitude that causes everyone so much grief. With a little cooperation and goodwill, we can all be happy and successful.

Isn't that just like him sumner, playing all innocent and such. Why the man has gone out his way on a weekly basis to slander both awshucks and myself for months on end.sumner4991 wrote:I don't know Grizz . . .you might want to get Mike P and awshucks to comment on that one.![]()
Shucks and I try to contribute meaningful dialog here at the forum and have nothing but good things to say about all our fellow forum members. And cheap shots are not in our quiver.
But this overgrown, hairy backed, long winded verbal assassin has stepped over the line and we will not stand for it any longer. Thus I call on you my fellow members to request, nay, demand censure of this individual.
Here is what I propose. Please do not respond to any post presented here at this forum from Grizzly Adam until he presents us a picture showing that he has had his back waxed in the form of the Excalibur logo.
Only then will he prove to the good citizens of the forum that he has shown remorse and is once again welcomed back into the forum family.

It's a separate season for dog hunting, right? If everyone is dog hunting, then I wouldn't see a problem with having the dogs "wondering" over to my land. It may even help me take a buck. I've never felt like the deer on my property were "my deer". I think some people, like Mike P., raise the deer for their own wall. If I sent my dogs over to Mike P.'s place, then I can see the issue.
Mike P is probably out right now putting numbers on those fawns for future harvest records.
Get 'em Mike.

OK . . .I see. I really don't like dogs wondering in and "messin up" my hunting. Same reason I don't like seeing coyotes.Grizzly Adam wrote:Nope. Once rifle season is in, dog season is in. Thus the frequent fireworks!sumner4991 wrote:It's a separate season for dog hunting, right?

I come not to condemn Mike P, but to praise him --
For he is an honorable man.
Wait a minute! My apologies to Willie S.

Can't you see that this is a desperate man ... eager to eliminate me from the forum so that he can ascend to power and impose minimum antler restrictions upon all of you?
Open your eyes to what this madman is doing! Don't allow his velvet-gloved pen and satin sayings to blind you to his neurosis ... he intends to have your small eights ... your four-points and button bucks ... he means to have them all ... in his trophy program!
He knows I am perceptive enough to read between the lines of his warm-and-fuzzy stories. He perceives me as the threat I am ... to his elitist preferences! He's courting all of you like a lover with his accusations; he's even trying to turn the ladies against me by making references to my big-and-fuzzy physique. How crass.
He must be stopped!
Who is here so base that would be a bondman to this madman?
If any, speak; for him have I offended.
Who is here so rude that would not kill whichever bucks he desires?
If any, speak; for him have I offended.
Who is here so vile that will not hunt as he wishes?
If any, speak; for him have I offended.
I pause for a reply.
Wait a minute! There I go with that Willie S. stuff again!

Y'all don't listen to this nut! Don't ban me from the forum! Don't censure my posts! Leave my back alone! April like to run her fingers through that stuff!
I'm your friend! I'm on your side! I say kill any buck you like!

Don't you see what he's doing by turning you against me? Don't be sucked in by his whining ... you'll be sorry! You'll all be sitting around waiting for "shooters" ... your freezers will be empty!
Let me stay!

Dog-gone, I do some testing for a ML bullet maker,so I shoot a lot,Longest ml shot 318yrds 50cal Denali 260gr. deadcenter bullet, small doe. Eastern shore MD. 730yards sika deer,257 weatherby mag, next to that weatherby comes my 264winchester mag, I don't know how many deer and other critters between 400 and 500 yards with this one, been awhile, exomax heart stopper 63yards ground pig, aimed at his head arrow had about a ten in drop and hit him in lower back,it stuck him to the ground for a few seconds, when he did head for his hole he looked like a remote ground hog with a foot of the arrow and fletching sticking up out of his back, anyway I thought it looked funny.

My longest is 250 yards. It was a mule deer in Colorado. I was hunting with my dad and brother. My dad had shot the largest fork horn I had ever seen and had to weigth over 300 pounds. My dad had a bad ankle and my brother doesn't do good with the altitude so lucky me got to drag the mulie (luckily downhill) about a mile and a half down to the closest road in knee deep snow. Right when I got his deer to the road a herd of mulies jumped and ran. My forkie stopped to look back as I had dropped down to the ground for a rest and to make my shot. I was about an hour and a half into the drag and definitely winded. I got the forkie with my second shot. Then I had the pleasure of dragging it up that 250 yards to the road. And when I say road I really mean off road 4wheeler trails so I was legal with it.
Why ride when you can walk!
