Black Flies

Post by Mike Smith »

Can anybody out there tell me if the threma cell repellent works on black flies? Heading out moose hunting soon and if the flies are like last year it would be nice to have some protection other than a head net. Thanks and keep up the most informant form going.

I was just wondering that myself! I seen them in the states, but didn't pick one up since I have NO idea if they Really work.

Do they produce any "scent"?

YES a buddie tested them out last year in northern ontario during the archery moose hunt... there were days he was the only one in camp that was still out hunting ... he even went down into the spruce bogs...

have you bought one yet..... they are hard to find now in ontario

Walmart carries them for $29, and they're $39 at Canadian Tire. Found them at these stores in Kanata.

Canadian Extreme Hunting Supplies also carries the thermacell, the refills and the holster. It's a new company out of Orleans just outside Ottawa. They also carry various other hunting supllies.

Mike, I tried mine this spring and it had no visible effect on the black flies. They still chewed me up pretty good and some even landed on the Therma Cell while they were waiting in the buffet line. They're great for mosquitos, but I'd suggest you take along some protective clothing on your moose hunt.

We have tried many things in Algonquin and north of the Sault in bear season, nothing works like a flame thrower... hehe. Actually a full net coat and Repel in the green top bottle did the trick for me. On bare skin, they didn't land for long and never bit.

Tried them for a week hunting deer this year. Seemed to do a good job on black flies and mossies, but absolutely zero repellent for deer flies.
