E-Mag Nails 6-point - new pic

Post by korey99 »

Hey guys...Just a note to let you all know that the E-mag struck again! I shot this little 6 pointer tonight, and he had a broken back leg, from being struck by a car. He'd have never made it thorugh the winter...his left hind leg was totally removed from the joint...no chance of it healing....the wound looked fairly old, not a recent injury.

Congratulations !!! It looks like from the blood that you got an excellent shot off on him. Is it possible that the growth is from where another arrow passed through or got stuck and tried to heal ??? I just don't know about that one. I could learn something new here thats for sure but I didn't think that a six point buck could be that very old but I'm not sure. Or are you saying he looks old for a six pointer ? I guess not much help from me...Anyway I'm glad you was successful with his retrieval.

That growth is signs of an older injury and usually from a bullet passing through. I have come across injuries such as these in the past. I have many years of taxidermy experience and would occassional come across these injuries in the shop and have taken them apart to see what has caused them. The healing process can sometimes look strange but I feel your are safe on this one.

Congrats on getting your buck and I feel confident that you have prevented the buck from having a terrible winter for survival.

Regards,
Sam

Congrats Korey. What's that 3 for 3? I believe you got a couple of nice bucks the past two years as well. It looks like you hit him pretty far forward? Let's hear the story. :)

Wouldn't worry about those skin growths. Probably nothing more than the equivelant to a wart. I've seen plenty of growths like that on dogs(animal hospital), in fact my dog has one right now. They can be cancerous in nature, but other than effecting the deer they wouldn't do you any harm.

Congrats on the buck! That was a nice thing you did. Surely you prevented that buck from a slow agonizing death.

p.s. If I'm seeing correctly, careful with there being a bolt still in the crossbow.

Yup, Partikle, you remember well. That's actually four bucks in the past 3 years...I have a productive spot! I did shoot him in the shoulder, as it was a quartering-towards shot. Exited lower, back of the leg on the other side, as I was up in a tree stand from about 20 yards

I got up in my stand at about 5:00PM, waited 15 minutes for everything to settle from my entrance , then gave a few soft grunts on the call..trying to emulate a smaller buck. After 1/2 hour, I gave a couple of more little grunts, and not 5 minutes later this fellow snuck up behind me...DIRECTLY behind me, so much I couldn't get the bow around for a shot. He was about 15 yards away when I was able to crane my head around and snap these blurry pic's. Question for you all...do they look like the same deer (my harvested buck and this other one)? I didn't notice the limp on this first buck, and I think the rack's are different...but I'd like your opinion....

After that first buck turned around and wandered back into the woods, the buck I shot began heading my direction from about the same location about 1/2 hour later. I could see him from about 50 yards, through the brush, and saw him cross a little clearing, noticing the limp for the first time. I watched him for 45 minutes, just browsing along the creek in front of my stand, and he stopped to hook a few small trees along his walk. His back leg made his travel VERY slow, and he finally made the decision to head in my direction, ever so slowly. He finally gave me a clear shot from 20 yards, and I let him have it. The rest is history. I just finished skinning him, and will be taking him to the abattoir before work tomorrow morning. Those little growth's were only on the fur, and I couldn't see anything different from a normal deer on the meat after he had been skinned. I'm sure he'll taste fine!

Chat soon...

PS Yes Chris, there was a bolt on the bow for one pic, and it was safely pointing the other direction...I made sure. Thanks for the concern.
