There is a product called "Sol Soda" that you add to the boiling water. It eats up the nasty stuff really well. I got mine from a taxidermy supply house. For making it white, you can get a bottle of peroxide from any hair dresser. Get the maximum strength..."40". You have to wear gloves and glasses and an apron with this stuff, (or be darn careful if you don't) but it will really bleach the skull white.

Terry,

When boiling with the peroxide is it necessary to keep the antlers above water to avoid discoloration? Do you have any tricks/gadgets that you use to hold up the antlers while the skull is in the pot, or do you simply rest the antlers on the rim of the pot (a photo would be much appreciated if available)?

I have always boiled for my antler mounts (see pic below) and wrapped the antlers in tinfoil to protect them from heat during the boiling process.

I do wrap the antlers with foil at the bases and try to keep the bases from bleaching. The last few mounts I did I just bought some antler stain from a taxidermy store for $14 and retouch the bases and put a light coat over the rest of the anlter it gives it a nice shine and protects the antlers from drying out and looking dull.

Kenton, I have only done one so far, and it is the entire skull with lower jaw included. You just have to line it up right, mark it off and use 2 screws(small as possible) to keep it held in place. Now that I think about it, I believe the 2 sides of the bottom jaw came apart when boiling, so you need a third screw to hole them together first. I think I put it at the base of the jaw, right after the teeth. I use pilot holes obviously so you dont split the jaw bone. Then just take some liquid paper and paint over the screwheads. The bottom teeth also have to be glued to keep them in place.

I think the next time I do one, hopefully this year, I will try the painting technique, as they look wicked!!

Sodium carbonate (also known as washing soda or soda ash), Na2CO3, is a sodium salt of carbonic acid.

In taxidermy, sodium carbonate added to boiling water will remove flesh from the skull or bones of trophies to create the "European skull mount" or for educational display in biological and historical studies.

European mounts are my favorite. I designed a skull mount a while back and had some help on the final design and ended up with a very special Item. I have a small CNC shop at home and make alot of products. One is this skull mount in which I supply for a few Taxidermy shops around the world. I just joined this forum and I am in no way trying to force my Items to anyone. I just think that some of you folks here may like these.

Just finished it. I'll get a brass plate engraved and make it complete. My european neighbour was familiar with this type of display and walked me thru the procedure.

bow4it ~ nice woodwork you've done.
