Carying deer NZ style

Post by NZ Hunter »

This is the way most animals are caried in New Zealand, just like a pack with the legs bound together. Slowly but surely we get our deer back. Shot this one yesterday morning he weighed in at 94.5Kilos which is 207 pounds. We came 7th in a anual hunting comp which was called the "Big Three" where you have teams of three people and you need to shoot a stag, a Pheasant and catch a fish which we call a Snapper over a three day period to actually be in the running for a prize. Unfortunatley we only managed a 5lb snapper. There were fifty eight teams in the event, it was a blast, teams get together at the end for prizegiving lots of stories to be told over a few cold ones.

Congatulations to you and your team, a very respectable finish!

About packing out the deer. You got to be tougher than a bag of hammers to carry that much weight !!!! That is a novel way to pack out a deer. Have never seen it done like that.

Still hard for me to think there are deer in what looks like a jungle. Deer hunting here can get do right cold in this neck of the woods.

I relly enjoy seeing how it is done in other country's. :) :) :)

That's really cool, NZ Hunter. I've never seen that type of carry-out either. It sounds like you guys had a great time. Drink a cold one for me.

That scares me. Looks like a good way to get shot. Sound like you had fun.

It sounds dangerous to cary animals this way, in fear of being shot. I simply dont hunt where there may be other hunters, or wrap a strip if flouro orange over the back of the deer. Yes we do get covered in blood. Best way to do it is leave the drain hole plug intact, The back end can be taken out back at the truck. If we are simply miles in and ruged country with an animal that is too big I will bone it out. I thaught this was the only way to cary an animal as this is the way our fathers fathers did it. The country is too hilly with thick sort of bush to use any sort of barrow. I wouldnt want to cary much heavier animals than this as at 40 yrs I had a few aches the next day, I am not as fit as I used to be. Cant wait to take my Phoenix for another walk. More of a challenge equals more of an accomplishment.
