Hi all,
I'm new to hunting and plan on going out tommorow morning for my first time, but I have a question. I just bought a deer call, (Knight & Hale, Translator deer call) but I'm wondering which calls would be most effective (dominant buck, young buck, doe bleat, fawn bleat)? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Hi Chris and welcome to the forum
I do not have alot of pratical experience but a good bit of book knowldge.
IMHO is is a bit early for any kind of aggressive calling unless you are hunting for a doe and the some emotional fawn distress calls might be in order.
Aside from that I would think soft calling would be best,Buck or Doe.
I'm sure others with much more experience will be posting on this subject and I will be reading with interest as well.
You have found a great place with great people. They have helped me at every request.Once again WELCOME

Chris,
This early in the season I'd stick with a few doe bleats, and keep the calling light! It won't be long until grunts will be a part of the calling though! It might even be time in some of the northern regions. Here in Ohio I'll give them a couple more weeks. Usually wait until I see some definite signs of pre-rut activity.

I use one 2
THE Can which is a doe bleat type call. You just turn it upside down to make the sound. It works awesome during the rut! But I usually end up with 2-3 little spikes coming to it.
I have a old cheap grunt call which only makes a mature buck grunt. I blow that last year when i heard some leaves moving and here came a nice 8pt run mad ready to fight. Thats the only real luck ive had with it. But for any grunt, use the young or mature one.
The best sounding grunt call I have heard and have no is the nerw Mad calls Buck Growl. Its 19.99-24.99 and makes the growl which is a new sound. But the grunt from it is UNREAL.. sounds just like the real thing and I plan on using that for all my grunting this year.

Rattling and Grunting has worked for the last week here in Ontario. I have had a number of bucks into the call. Right now the deer here are in the Pre Rut phase. Bleating will work , but rattling in a slow non agressive way for a length of around a minute then add a few soft grunts at the end. There is no real formula to calling so mix it up a little. Grunt a couple times and then do some rattling and end it with a couple more grunts and maybe a bleat to let bucks now that there is bucks after the area does.
Believe me I had a show tonight in the stand after rattling and grunting...
