How much feed?
How much corn do you go through a week in your home made PVC feeders? I thought after putting up the feeders I would use less but I still go through a 50lb bag a week in the three I have out.
Also do you all make sure there is corn in the feeder at all times or do you let it run out for a few days between refills?

The amount of corn you use depends on the wildlife in your area. Coons, bluejays, chipmunks will also eat corn.

My gosh you guys are tight with the corn. I been feeding 100 # a week in one spot. I heard that it is best to just toss it on the ground since they can pass diseases back and forth through any type of above ground feeder. Corn is only $4.15 a 50# bag here which is a rip off since farmers are only getting $2.00 a bushel. I want to get a couple 55 gallon barrels full right out of the combine when they start picking.

My observations have been that the deer are extremely nervous around the PVC feeders. The buck I shot last week wanted nothing to do with it as he was browsing in the food plot. He kept eyeing the now extrmely fat blue jays and chipmunks as they hit the feeder but never got close to it. It only took them 3 days to empty that 5 foot pipe. His stomach content only had apples and grasses. The deer I have observed in the previous years also re-acted the same. A nite time trail cam only revealed pictures of racoons.
There is much food still available for them until the snow flies in a few weeks. Perhaps at that point in time they will start eating the corn. Until then I will leave the feeders empty. The darn raccons are climbing into my tree stands and crapping after gorging themselves.

Here in Fl, I only use the hanging feeder on a timer. I use a 16 gallon trash can, which holds exactly 100 pounds of corn, and I have it set where it dispenses corn for five seconds every morning, adjusting the time that it throws according to sunrise. I get 2 months out of the corn, but I like to refill every month to make sure it doesn't run out. The savings I have in the corn off sets the cost of the feeder and timer, and also cuts down on the varmint intrusion. I also keep it filled year round.

Hi Tigerpaw,
Not sure what else I can tell you about the home made gravity PVC feeder except deer seem to be avoiding them in my area. I would recommend you set one of yours up and if possible borrow or purchase a trail cam and then point it at it to determine what type of nocturnal animal is eating out of it.
Best wishes and let me know your results.
BTW, I also found bite marks on the top protective rain cap on one of them. Racoon or squirrel perhaps?
