Socks

Post by Ben S. »

Does anyone use the wool socks with batteries you can buy at Canadian Tire? If so how do they work?

Buy a good pair of Merino wool socks. They'll last longer and in the end save you a lot of money on batteries.

socks

I always would get cold feet so tried a pair of battery socks the only lasted for a couple of weeks before the streched out and were no good. last year I got a $12 pair of basspro extreme wool treestand socks and the lasted all season and are still going strong. I have wore them so many times I bet over 40 or 50 hunts and washings. I bought 3 more pairs this season they aren't cheap but the are nice and last.

Keep your receipt for the BassPro socks. If they wear out take them back for another FREE pair. Guranteed not to wear out.

Have done alot of backpacking in free time also and a friend of mine got me hooked on "SMARTWOOL" name brand socks. They are real expensive for socks, but I'm still wearing the first pair of many that I have bought. And that was probably 6-7 years ago. The thicker pairs keep you plenty warm even when wet and they don't stretch out like cheaper socks do. Sometimes when its real cold I'll also wear a pair of liner socks in addition. Again, they are expensive, but nothing is worse than cold feet.

I bought some of the "smartwool" socks from LL Bean a few years ago. They are very warm, and require no special laundering care.
In the winter I wear nothing but wool socks, but the best way to keep feet warm is good insulated boots over the wool socks!

I don't know if my situation is uniqe or what but here is what happened to me.
I bought a Polypropolene liner and a Marino wool sock and it worked great untill I put a Toasty Toes heat pack under my toes, the heat made my feet sweat and when the heat wore off I got colder than if I had not used the heat pack.I wont use the heat pack in my boots again but let the socks and thinsulate do the job.

Just my two cents, I like silk and wool inter and outer socks. If you are just setting around try the thin polypros with thick wool outer.

Been about 20yrs. ago that I had the socks that heat up from the 9 volt battery. The left one worked fantastic but the right one had the heat element right under my sole and everytime I stepped it felt just awful

When it gets down in the teens now I put my pac boots on with a good tight fitting high sock. :P

I have always gone with wool over cotton. I purchased some Irish Setters last fall with the 1000 gram Thinsulate. So far dry and toasty. Dry feet are warm feet. Don't get anything too warm or your feet wil sweat and then get cold.

Battery socks

Post by Isis »

Don't waste your money, they are virtually useless.
I bought a pair last year, they hardly seem to get warm.

Save your money and get the life time socks from basspro if you wear them out they replace them for free . They are made of morino wool and are very warm , I have a pair of those battery socks they are about as useless as udders on a bull . They get to hot so your feet sweat then you unsnap them then your feet get cold , its a vicious circle. just my opinion

Hi Ben,

I have a pair of Canadian Tire electric socks and they do work but they get expensive on batteries. You don't feel your feet getting warm because it only heats up your toes to your body temperature, not higher. If it got higher your feet would sweat. You don't notice your feet being warm but you do notice that they are not getting cold.

Last year I picked up a pair of boot insulators and my feet never got cold.

Make sure you have a pair of boots that are large enough so that 2 pairs of wool socks will fit and not be tight. Your feet need room to move a bit so that circulation will keep moving. You put these boot insulators on once you get to your stand.

I got mine on eBay.
