Shot distance survey

Post by Highlander »

Let's run a quick survey. Anyone who has shot deer this year, how far away were they when you shot?

Both bucks i took this year with the MAG have been inside 20 yards. The first was at 12 yards and the second i would say 16 - 17 yards. Having said that i wouldn't hesitate to shoot up to 35 yards if i had to!

Me too, but I'm interested in what the realities of the field are....

Two so far this season, one from the ground and one from a stand. Both well under 10 yards.

This is good. Not much different than I thought it would be, but then again it's still early in the survey. It'd be great if we had hundreds of answers to come up with a solid average. We all might be surprised.

I know we've all talked about furthest ranges we'd shoot, but I think getting a good representatiion of actual field ranges will help me, and hopefully others, determine where to spend most of our time on the practice range. Let's keep the shotgun, muzzleloader, and rifle scores out from here on in. Bow ranges will work though. I probably should have phrased the question better. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Too Easy

Post by grauhund »

You guys that like the super up-close shots should consider switching to something a little more challenging by either just "butt-stroking" the deer or better yet, try an Atlatl. You can see an Atlatl in action in the great new movie "Apocalypto". They are legal for hunting in some states.

Atlatl - (From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
An atlatl or spear-thrower is a tool that uses leverage to achieve greater velocity in spear-throwing, and includes a bearing surface which allows the user to temporarily store energy during the throw. It consists of a shaft with a cup, in which the butt of the spear rests. It is held near the end farthest from the cup, and the spear is thrown by the action of the upper arm and wrist. A well-made atlatl can readily achieve ranges of greater than 100 meters.
