How far North have the Wild Turkeys made it?

Post by DanO »

Just wondering if guys are seeing wild turkeys much above a line drawn from Huntsville, Parry Sound, over to Pembroke. The original theory was that the winters would be too harsh in the area North of that line (if I remember correctly). With warmer winters I'm just wondering if you're seeing any birds.

Not sure how far they have made it but they are as far north as Bracebridge.

I have a cottage about 30 mins north of huntsville, and have seen NO turkeys on the 10 acre parcel. Mostly bush to mention

I spoted some turkeys last year around the Bancroft area. Their is a local group that is insuring that those birds stick around there.

Pretty amazing web site, check it out.

We have seen plenty of birds in the Port Carling area.

It must be close to hunting populations; according to friends living up there.

Oneshot....

I know they are up at Shawville Quebec. That's right across the river from Renfrew Ont.

Glad to here it! I haven't seen any up there yet myself. Our camp is just off Muskoka Rd 3 between Domtar Rd and Aspdin.

Awesome info guys! I did see one near Whitney on the east side of Algonquin Park. Interesting they've made it up as far as South River. I wonder if Algonquin is too cold for them. I have a camp in the Mattawa area and I'm wondering if I'll ever see them in that area.

As I understand it, the northerly limit of the turkey range in Ontario will shift according to the severity of the winters. I'm told not to expect a hunting season in areas like Pt. Severn, Whitney, etc., since the birds are not expected to be capable of establishing stable, long-term populations in those areas. I guess time will tell.

Turkeys present in Pembroke, ON. As mentioned, also present around Shawville, QC, and other parts north of Hull/Gatineau, QC and the east part of these, as far as Namur, QC.

Turkey population not that big, but growing, which could in two years time open up a Spring hunt in those QC areas. Let's hope.
Old Indian saying, if a leaf falls from a tree in the woods the turkey will see it, the deer will hear it, the bear will smell it, the moose will not eat it, but be on the look-out for LeGrand.
