More from the north

Post by ecoaster »

Managed to put the sneak on another caribou the other day and snap some pics. These things are part goat. This guy was down on his knees at one point leaning over a 100ft cliff to get at some grass.

A bull scratching his antlers......
Image

Some more pics of the bull. I had this fella at 10ft from me before I made myself know. That rack sure was big as he fed toward me with his head down............

The terrain with our jobsite in the background........

A hunting camp down the shoreline. It's just a room, no furniture at all......

I hope all you guys are enjoying the heat down south. We have been in fall clothing since we arrived  .

Cool pics! That bull has some big shovels. Still think you should try and grab one. Or grab that head your co-worker found and pretend you are caribou, just to see what they do.

It's great of you to share this unique experience with us. Just curious what level of zoom did you use to take the shot of the caribou? It's amazing country up there, have you had a chance to eat some char? and how about Muktuk, yummmmm!

Wish I could send you some heat from southern Ohio. It's 95°F / 35°C right now. Image

That little one room hunting cabin is beautiful! :)
I have always wanted to do a Cariboo hunt, but the price is a little up there though. One day though, it will come.

Tigerpaw,

Place is called Deception Bay. It's on the Ungava Peninsula(norhtern tip of Quebec), between Ungava Bay and Hudson Bay.

Andre,

I used a Nikon L1 digital camera with a 5X zoom, but I didn't need it for most photos because the bull was so close.

Wow! Great shots ecoaster.

Hey tigerpaw, enjoy Igloolik, I spent 2 years in Hall Beach just 60 miles south of Igloolik. Amazing country. You have to try some muktuk while you are there.

Hull Beach for two years eh! Just long enough to be able to hunt without getting a guide and outfitter. I go up to the NWT or Nunavut to work for two to three weeks every couple months. Hull Beach is a nice small community what did you do to keep from going stir crazy. You are right the country is AMAZING and if you hit it the right time of the year the fishing is out of this world!! I have eaten muktuk twice both times it tasted O.K. but I had to chew it for an hour! lol

There's only two reasons someone stays up in the arctic for two years; good money or in the Air Force (don't have a choice) lol. The job of Air Defence on the DEW (distant early warning) Line kept us busy, but I spent as much time as possible outdoors. Wasn't into hunting back then, but the fishing was great and I racked hundreds of hours on the ski-doo. Regarding muktuk, you're a better man than me!
Iisshh kabloona enjoy and be safe.
