Any Dutch Oven experts on here?

Post by DrDan »

I must admit, I'm into cooking (my big gut shows it) and I just got a dutch oven to use on my camping trip which is coming up soon. Man these things are cool. You can cook anything in them! I got a 10" Lodge oven but I can see that I better get a 12" also. You can stack them on top of each other and cook the whole meal including bread, rolls, dessert, etc.

LOL I have a new reason for that gut!

You can also use dutch ovens in regular oven. The great thing about them is the evenness of the heat. I made lemon/poppyseed rolls in mine in the oven and they were the very best I have ever made. Mmmmm

What a fat slob I am!

Love my Lodge dutch ovens. I've got a 14" flat bottom one for the spam and several different-sized ones with legs for camping. My dad uses a cutoff shovel handle with a J-hook at the bottom to lift his lids off when camping, but I find that too unstable and I hate risking ashes from the lid falling into my food. I use mitts and an old pair of aluminum BSA pliers to get the lid off. These pliers also have a hook on the handle for grabbing the wire handle of the dutch oven.

Got a 10" Lodge Deep version about 6 weeks ago. Some of my camping buddies have been using them for years. Just learng, but have cooked black eyed peas and several types of beans. Works great!

Looking forward to using it while BBQ shoulders and cooking side dishes. Also does great on cobblers for desert.

LOL I don't think you can own just one oven. I got a 10" but was eyeing up a 12" Lodge at Wally World tonight. Be nice to stack them up and do the meat in one and a sidedish or dessert in another.
