A FIRST FOR MY NEW PHOENIX

Post by BOB VANDRISH »

I have been hunting locally, and had a few sightings, and have also been spending quite a bit of time down at my cabin in northwestern PA.
Finally had a nice 8 point come up to me close to the end of legal hunting time this past Saturday evening, and with one shot broadside dropped him on the spot!
Then came the fun on Sunday morning,as I had to take the cape off to get it to the taxidermist, and then finish the process of skinning and deboning it which took the better part of the day yesterday,so that I could get it frozen and then head back here today.
You cannot bring a whole deer back to Canada, due to the concern about CWD.
Now all packaged up and in my freezer and ready to try the straps tomorrow for supper!
Time for a rest!

My spot in PA is just west of Marshburg,on Route 59.(south west of Bradford)
Been hunting that area for 30 years.
Quite a few people from Pittsburgh have camps in the same area.
I am right on the edge of the Allegany National forest.

It was good for my morale too,as deer sightings in that part of PA have been very lean!
As far as the cape, you start from behind the front legs, and skin the deer down towards the head, skinning as far as you can go,and then cut the neck off at the base of the skull.
The taxidermist wants as much of the front part of the body as he can get,as this will be a shoulder mount.
He skins out the rest, and goes from there.
I have asked for a semi sneak mount, from page 15 of the latest Van Dyke Taxidermy Supply catalog.
I expect to have the mount back in a month or so,as this is his "lean" time for projects.

Great choice! Of all the forms available to the taxidermist, this is by far my most favorite pose. I think it depicts the antlers in the most flattering position.
