Busted again

Post by raydaughety »

I have an ameristep doghouse blind that I've been using for a couple of years. Brianna and I went to the blind this afternoon for the last hour of light. I put the blind in the corner of a corn field that had a little corn standing in the middle of the field for the deer. The blind is blended in well with corn stalks. The wind could not have been any better. I had all the windows closed as well. A shootable buck stepped into the field shortly after we got there and I decided to go ahead and shoot him. Brianna saw the deer but didn't move or say anything "yet". Well, the buck looked toward the blind and it was like he saw a huge warning sign. He had us pinned  . He didn't stay but a second and bolted. What gives? This is the third time that this has happened this year with the blind. It's not faded or anything :?
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

I agree! You need to mud the blind! Fill a bucket with some dirt from the corn fill and make a mud slurry with some water. Use a paint brush and slap on the slurry all over the blind. Let it dry then rinse off the heavy areas and dust off the light mudded areas. This should take care of the glare. I have had this happen with turkeys and geese. They see that new fabric glare. Also if you can leave the blind in the location and cover it with some matching camo burlap to protect it from U.V. rays (trust me cover it the sun will desroy it I learned the hard way) this will allow the deer to get used to it being there. I put my pop up out 1 month before turkey season and had the deer in the spring feeding right beside it! Also had the turkeys roosting above it which kinda sucked opening morning when I was going into my blind and got busted! Try the mudding, it works any good waterfowler will tell you the same! My Doghouse blind has been in position for a couple months now, so the critters are used to it. I have noticed that it really stands out where it's positioned for 1/2 hour or so in the evenings when the setting sun catches it just right. I have it with light, low cover in front and heavier brush & trees behind, plus tree branches (maple) almost touching the top. Luckily in the valley where it's set up by the time the deer start moving good it's in the shade of the hill to the west.
Just from looking at it when I walk in about 4:30PM I'd say the glare theory makes sense. It has a definate shine that makes it stand out when the sun is at the right angle.
I may try mudding it up a little, it's right on the creek bank, so it wouldn't take too much effort.

As most know, I'm disabled and sometimes can't get into my stand. This is when I use the ameristep. Now, I have definitely come to the conclusion that the doghouse is not big enough for Tyler and I during bow season. I'm looking for a larger blind that Tyler and I can set up hunt in and take back down in an evening hunt. Being disabled, I do sit on some logging roads and interior roads on the farm and the hunting club. A lot of times, Tyler and I will find a good looking area with a lot of tracks and deer sign, drive up in the truck, drop off the blind, chairs, weapons, ect.......Tyler will move the truck around a curve or whatever and walk back to the blind. Can anyone recommend a quality blind that can be set up and taken down the same day without to much hassle.

PS. I hate those noisy velcro windows. What you guys think? Double Bull maybe? It's no different that an able bodied hunter spending a few hundred buck on a good climber.

Thanks and God Bless

I keep telling my husband not to bother with jewelry... The DoubleBull Matrix is my dream blind! (lust, lust, lust)

The DogHouse I bought on eBay this year is already a nice step up from the Eastman blinds I've been using.
