I was wondering who uses antlers for rattling and how much success you have had??
I rattled a small one in last year during the ontario shotgun season ( then missed him @ close range )
I rattled on Sunday only to see one running for the hills about 70 yrds in front of me.
I am not really hunting a trail more like a travel route through a cedar swamp.
I thought I would be able to get a small buck to come in but no luck.
I am looking for any advise on using Rattling or grunting during this time to lure in a buck. should I or not , one or the other or both, How long should my sparring sessions be???
I am in a good area for Bucks aprox 150 acres of cedar swamp and hardwood edges
Thanks
I was grunting and breaking up some small sticks yesterday and had a nice 8 pt come in,I was hunting a thick public land bush. The only problem was I did not see him come in,and I got busted by him when I got up to leave. The old saying should have waited a little longer before leaving

I've had that happen before. I got out of my stand to meet my dad at the field. While sitting at the edge of the field waiting for him and brian, a buck walked right under my stand and saw me and he let me know it and took off. If I had of stayed in the stand I would have had him.
I have had extremely good success rattling. One thing you can be the farm on is he WILL come DOWNWIND.
To Combat this, you need a Natural Barrier downwind to you, such as an open field, A steep ridge, a wide creek, or just SOMETHING that will not allow him to get dead down wind of you.
There ain't no cover scent or fancy sprays that will fool him. This is the biggest sales gimic in the world. You can spray down with Gas if you want and as long as you don't let them get down wind, you will be good to go.
Timing has a LOT to do with it also.
Too Early in the year = NO SHOW
RUT= Little showing or No Show
This Week up to the 10th of November = Success with Rattling
Post Season December 8th on = Success with Rattling
Grunt a few times and wait for 5 minutes, then rattle. None of this Sissy City Boy rattling, I am talking AGGRESSIVE Rattling. Grunt while you do it. Stomp the ground, Shake saplings and such. CONSTANTLY be scanning for movement.
After a SOLID Minute of Rattling. Lay off for 10 to 15 minutes and do some grunting.
When you see him coming, Grunt him in. He will be expecting to hear noise or maybe even see movement.
Don't jack around when he is in range. You should already be on him and take the first shot opprotunity.
DO NOT FOCUS on deer you DO NOT WANT TO SHOOT. If he ain't big enough to suit you, Keep scanning, the big boy is coming.
This works any time of day, but Still mid Morning from 9 to 11 seems to be Real good, also from 3 to an hour before dark.
If you don't rattle one in. Their AINT NO ducks where they can hear you.
Now I am NOT coming up with this stuff from watching the outdoor channel, We are talking 25 years experience. Making the mistakes and having success, watching big bucks fight during all phases of the Pre Rut- Rut - and Post Rut. They make a racket.
Sparing like they do and making sissy rattles are for September and early October when they are just Playing.
Some very good advice!! thanks for reminding me of all the variables, but the wind is the most important.Yet I have been in a tree stand and watch one of our doggers go through a spot and not ten minutes later a huge deer came in right behind him,is this a case of the deer making sure he is behind the man?when the bush is full of human scent, during the shotgun hunt.
