Christmas Eve Scored a Nice Doe~!
MERRY CHRISTMAS ALL~!
Well, after a very very late start to my season it came together tonight. Earlier this week I was offered two new areas to hunt by the farmer I helped all last week with his turkey (domestic) season. I scouted the property and saw some promising sign.
Tonight I headed out and set up between what I thought was the food source and their bedding area on some well used trails. The wind was blowing at about 40 - 60 km/h with snow flurries and I found myself questioning my sanity after an hour or so in a tree that was making me sea sick.
With about 15 minutes of legal shooting time left I caught some movement coming from the cedars and soon realized that two deer were headed my way. I watched as two nice does emerged from the thick cedars leading to a swamp and slowly made their way to me. I ranged my best shooting position at 21 yards and waited......The pair came into the 25 yard mark straight towards me and turned giving me a nice broadside target.
I watched the cedars looking for addition deer hoping for a buck to be pulling up the rear but as time was not on my side I zeroed in on the biggest of the two at 24 yards and dropped the hammer. The doe jumped straight in the air and as funny as it sounds I thought "hey that's just like on the hunting channel". I watched as the pair bolted towards the swamp and the noticed the deer that I had pulled the trigger on start to run into trees and then I could not tell for sure but I thought I seen her go down. I was not totally sure that she had gone down so I waited about 10 minutes and quietly made my way down the tree and headed back to my truck.......
I was late for Christmas Eve dinner at my girlfriends parents house . So, I headed into town and arrived at their house in full camo for dinner . After dinner (8 pm) I headed out to the farm and picked up the John Deere loader and back to the property. Well, I found my bolt with some really good sign; (As I walked into the area I noticed that other deer had walked in my tracks since I left )
I followed a really good trail and sure enough she had gone down right where I thought I seen her crash:
The best part was that my girlfriend wanted to come and help me with the recovery (the warm cab of the John Deere might have helped). The loader tractor sure made it easier with the field dressing.
1 down 2 to go~!
Cheers and again a very Merry Christmas to everyone,Robin

Way to go Sandman ! Pretty straight forward formula = find food source + find bedding area + set up on deer trail between bedding area and food source = a certain shooting opportunity !
You got the scouting thing down pat !! , Beauty doe ... Congrat's ! ... now I know why I couldn't get ahold of you last night when I phoned and left a message ..
