The Bears Of Grizz's Place
Here's a typical morning scene this time of year behind my house. Forgive the fuzziness ... this was an early shot:
Here's a boar that's been hanging around a lot lately. I stalked up to within 60 yards of him Saturday, when the beans were still up. He was lying in the field this morning:
He's young now, and around 250 ... but he's got big-bear genetics. Note his height, length ... and that long neck and head. He'll be a whopper in a couple of years, if I don't kill him in second bear season:
Here's a shot for perspective, from my backyard ... right through my skinning rack! :

He's out there again this morning ... searching the ground for any beans left after harvest, and lapping up what he finds.
One thing to keep in mind about bears is this:
They will be found where their belly gets full. Once they find a steady food source (like agricultural crops), they'll park on it until it's exhausted. Hunger and laziness controls their movements.
Since this bear (and about four others) has been thrashing the soybeans for the past month or so, he'll (they will) stick around until he's convinced the effort no longer pays off. Pretty soon, he'll head back into the swamp and focus on the soft mast found there.
By the December season, he won't be found hanging around that field edge every day ... because his belly won't be getting full there.
It's a rule you can depend on.

There's a terrific article in this month's issue of Sports Afield that suggests a list of hunting goals that hunters should try to achieve in a lifetime. One of the suggestions that really sticks in my mind is to hunt something that hunts back at you. This posting reminds me a lot of that article.hetichunter wrote:I bet the bears make deer hunting where you live a whole new experience!
