Guns in Southern Ontario

Post by DesertRat »

Hey guys, I kow this is a little off topic but now that deer season is over, I have switched my attention to critter killing. Years ago when this BS gun registration came onto the scene, I thought I had all the guns I needed and just did the POL. I WAS WRONG! I am challenging the PAL and am in search of a good yote gun like a 22-250 or .204 ruger.

Anyone know of any gun auctions this winter or even have a favorite mom and pop shop they have dealth with and had good service/good value?

Any info would be good.

I give most of my business to Triggers and Bows outside of Brantford, they not only have a great selection of guns they also happen to be one of the largest firearm auctioneer families going, Landsborough auctions.
It is a family owned shop.

You will love the .204 if that is your choice. :D

Hey DR,

Check out Triggers & Bows in Burford they also do auctions but I do not know when the next one is.

Also the old Lovetts shop is going again in Kitchener on King St. down by Chicopee.

Good luck with the exam, I am in the same boat as you with the POL & debating wether to challange the exam as well.

Another vote for Triggers and Bows!

The Gun Centre (the old Lovetts) here in Kitchener is pretty good too.

ch312, I have seen some good deals on the Savage guns. Do you own one? Good gun?

I am not looking at putting too much money into it as I don't hunt them nearly as much as I do deer but would like a nice shooting, dependable gun.

I will have a look at Triggers.

i have the savage/stevens 200 in 22-250. its the same barrel and action as the better savages, just with a stiffer trigger and plastic stock. my first time having it out i was sitting using shooting sticks and shot just under a 1" group with cheap white box ammo. definitely good enough for me.

its about $320 including shipping from cabelas/sir.

you can easily work the trigger or buy a good one for $80. the stocks from savage 110's will fit the 200 so its easy to find a nice wood or laminate.

I also thought I had all the guns I ever would need and got a POL. I challenged the PAL exam and it was easy. But make sure you spend the 15 dollars and buy the book. I read book twice and then wrote the exam the next morning. It is an easy test. Mine was for non restricted.

I bought a .243 Savage for for basicly an all round rifle. Mine is a model 11 and I just love it. 80 grain shells for preditor hunting and 100 grain should I use it for deer which I think I likely will. Real light with the synthetic stock and very little recoil. No complaints about it.

Had to put rifle in my dads name till they send me my pal. Expect about a 2 month wait from time you write till you get it. Wrote 2 weeks ago and still have not got my certificate from goverment that I need to even apply.

Hey, folks ... I'm not familiar with Canada's gun laws, except what I've heard on here over the years, which has been all negative complaints. I know your laws are much more restrictive than ours.

So tell me ... just exactly what do you Canadians have to go through to purchase and keep a firearm?

I fear we're headed down the same road here in the USA, what with the most anti-gun administration ever now in place. Their agenda is definitely against our traditional freedoms of firearm ownership.

grizz here we need to either take a course on firearm safety and pass a test or just read a book and challenge the test (not sure of the cost i believe it is around 200$) as well as register all firearms with the government serial number make and action type. this is just for non restricted weapons. ( rifles shot guns muzzle loaders) as far as restricted i don't know but i imagine it is a lot more complicated. i'm not sure of the exact figures but this system has cost billions i'm guessing

To have a non-restriced firearm, like a rifle or shotgun you need a PAL, Possession and Aquisition Licence, you can take a 2 day course and do the test at the end, or simply challenge the test anytime, to the tune of $60. Once your background check is cleared, or you satisfy they chief firearms officer that you turned over a new leaf, you get your licence.
From there that licence is needed to possess and acquire new firearms, at the time of sale the guns information is recorded by the Chief firearms officer and again, once cleared the firearm is handed over to you, usually only takes a few minutes.
To buy a handgun another test has to be written, called a restricted exam, once that is completed your PAL turns in to a RPAL, then you can go buy a handgun, setting you back another $60. Transport and usage of a restricted firearm here is a pain in the butt, they are very strict on those.
To carry a non restricted firearm you need to carry your PAL and the registration slip issued by the CFO (Chief firearms Officer) and you are good to go! There are a few advantages to our gun laws that do no exist in the US, one is our shotgun laws, here we can buy and use any length shotgun as long as it was made that way from a factory, for instance here we can buy a 6.5" shotgun, and it is very legal, while there you are restricted by barrel length before you have to jump through hoops and register with the ATF.
For an average hunter our laws are fine, it really isn't that big of a deal, more of a pain in the ass than anything, problem is that they are trying to restrict us even more, but the exact same thing is happening in the US, even worse it sounds like. Go to the NRA's website and see what good old obama is up to, soon you guys will be worse off than us by the looks of things.
If you are not willing to learn, nobody can help you, if you are willing, nobody can stop you.

One other advantage we have here in Canada is that since gun laws are basically a Federal matter once you have your PAL you can buy a gun anywhere in Canada and bring it back home with no hassles. I know in the U.S. there are a number of laws at the State level that restrict the sale and transport of guns from one state to another without the proper licensing.

Warning to all you law abiding married men as I once was your wife, girlfriend or exes will be solicited by the government and asked question about you. her answers can be the deciding factor in receiving your PAL/POL my firearms were held in" safekeeping"while I went through a messy divorce all good in the end just some friendly FYI.
