Wrapping Serving on String

Post by forrest-hunter »

What is the best way to stretch string to add servcing. Do I need to take stock off?

Leave it on the bow, take front of bow off stock, put in (padded) vise.

Make a (strong) string stretching jig. Requires removal of string from bow.

I built a string jig out of a 2x4 that works great for re-serving my string. I also use it to pre-stretch new strings before putting one on the bow.

Here is a link to an excellent "how to" thread that Boo wrote on re-serving your string:

I just reserved one earlier this week. Used two ratchet straps wrapped around ideally spaced tree trunks, hooking to the end loops & ratcheting until tight enough to squeeze out some of the wax in the string. Not the most convenint of setups, but it'll certainly get that string stretched & tight.

When re-serving, should the serving be wrapped in the same direction as the string twist or the opposite? For center serving, should the longer serving be waxed, cleaned, or what, before applying the short section of serving that contacts the trigger mechanism?

Thanks.

The string should be waxed before the serving is applied and the serving should be wrapped in the same direction as string twist, otherwise it will get loose when the string is twisted to shorten it.

I always reserve in the same direction as the original serving so I never really paid attention to that. I am sure that Boo will see this thread and comment. I am not sure what you mean by longer and shorter sections of serving so I can't offer any help there.

Bob. I think the reference was to the serving at the loops of an endless loop string so treat it like Comfy says, serve in the same direction as the center serving.
