Decoys

Post by Gimpaw »

I'm wondering if any of you use deer decoys, and if so, buck decoy or doe?
I've had mixed results. I always take care in regard to leaving my scent behind. I also put a bit of deer urine under the decoy.
As often as I've had curious bucks come into the set up, I've had them spook.
I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts.

Decoys are a lot of fun when they work. You are right when you say they spook as many deer as they draw in, but it's pretty cool when they do work.

ive got a carrylite I used 2 times and then never used again. This one you can remove the antlers so its a doe or buck. If you use a buck, the only bucks that will come to it will be 3.5-7 year olds. Anything smaller will spook. The reason I gave up with one is because some nosy doe would always come in and hang around long enough to know something wasnt right and they spook the other deer before they came in.

as said, if it works its an awesome sight. I just hate hauling one around and setting up.

I was out with friend last year here in Ontario and he decided to take his doe decoy and I kinda laughed at it myself.Anyways he put me in one of his stands and put the decoy out directly in front of me about 20 yds.All of a sudden I notice about 12-15 wild turkeys coming towards the decoy and then they all scattered everywhere like they saw me up in the stand which I knew they didnt.I few mins went by and out he came, maybe one of the biggest bucks I ever saw in body size but not much in the way of antlers.I cant tell you the rest of the story. :D
If im not out shooting deer.

I just bought a new E Z Buck from Carrylite. I'll be taking the horns off because our bucks are small. I may fashion some spikes to use in place. The assembly on these new ones is pretty cool and they fold down for carrying quickly. Can't wait to use it!!

If someone ever starts making spike antlers for these they would probably make money. Hmmmm.......

The only decoy I use is a white feather and I only use it on bucks that I can see and are over one hundred yards away from me.

And I will only use it if they will not respond to any calling.

have you seen the BOSS BUCK? I saw that thing in person and it would make half our deer leave here and go to another state. That things made for 180inch 250pound bucks

Maybe someone should start thinking about using it to keep deer out of gardens.

If your finding out that your buck decoy is scaring the smaller bucks, try removing one of the antlers so he would be a single antlered deer. This setup seems to not spook the smaller deer as much as they feel less threatened.

Yes decoys with deer is like decoys with turkeys. Sometimes they work and sometimes they spook the deer ................ but that is why they call it hunting.

A wonky antlered decoy (one small antler only) can also work for curious does.

I have a carrylite decoy I use from time to time - not really the greatest for hauling around. I always try to only have it partially exposed like on the edge of a corn field or brush - seems to keep the deer's attention longer and I added a white flag of my own to create a little movement with some wind. Have not taken any huge bucks with it but have had opportunities so I keep trying.
Life goes by quick - so don't think about going hunting - get out there and DO IT!

I have a Montana decoy doe that I haven't used much yet. Very lightwieght and easy to carry. I had a fawn come within a few yards of it last fall, stomping at it, etc.

It was pretty entertaining. :D

We used a buck decoy last year and we had good success. My buddy shot a 7 point that came running at it.The buck was chasing a doe we grunted at it and he just came running.
