It was Tyler's morning!!!!

Post by raydaughety »

I woke up yesterday morning with that familiar sharp pain in my low back and really just wanted to roll back over and try to go back to sleep but I knew that Tyler was probably laying in his bed, watching the alarm clock in anticipation of getting to the woods on the opening day of the N.C. muzzle-loading season. We got up, got dressed but when I opened the front door I was hit in the face with the warmest, muggiest air that I have felt in a long time. It was plain HOT!!!! By the time that we got to our stand and settled in we were soaked with sweat :x . This stand is a 4'x6' shooting house that my family built for me last summer that sits on the edge of an old road on our club. Anyhow, at the crack of day, Tyler and I were whispering back and forth about the upcoming season when a doe stepped out into the road and started walking our way. We had already decided that we would take a doe if one presented a good shot but she stepped out of the road before she came close enough to shoot. We had 3 does come in close enough to shoot but all had small fawns in tow. Finally, a good "meat doe" came out at 110 yards. I watched through the binoculars as Tyler slipped a 240grn bullet tight behind her shoulder. She bucked up like a stallion and leaped from the road but she didn't go far. We waited a few minutes before we walked down to where she was standing and as soon as Tyler stepped across the ditch, he said that he could see her belly shining through the thick brush  . Here's the bad news. As Tyler was dragging his 100 pound doe to the road, I decided to video tape the event using the camera that I just bought last week. The video turned out great but when I took the picture for the contest, I screwed something up and didn't get the picture . Tyler's a bit upset because he can't register his doe (improper picture) but I'm sure that he'll get another one  . Here's a picture that was taken from the video of him dragging her to the road:

BTW Saxman, you have a voicemail.

Now for the grand finale. We got her all cleaned up, hung her in the cooler and were taking the hide and "stuff" to the dumping hole that is at the end of an old trail. We came upon a bean field and noticed a deer running in the beans so we stopped and got out of the truck. I put the binos on the deer and discovered that it was a big doe and she was coming strait at us. I got grabbed my muzzleloader as did Tyler, she kept coming. Tyler whispered "shoot her dad, we can double up on opening day!" but she never slowed down and crossed the road about 75 yards in front of us. We agreed that someone must have spooked her explaining why she was running across a wide open field but that was not the case. Yep, for all of those that don't believe in an early rut, I'm about to prove you wrong  . The reason that we didn't see the buck that was chasing her is because he had his nose to the ground the entire time and was sneaking through the tall beans. He followed the exact same path as the doe and was coming right at us. I told Tyler to get ready, but he wanted me to shoot him. I strongly insisted that he shoot and I would back him up "just in case  '. I whistled at him but nothing, gave him one of the bahhhhs that you hear on tv, no luck, so I hollered "HEY BUCK" at him and he slammed on the brakes. He crumbled at the shot from Tyler's CVA Wolf :D . Ya'll, Tyler was absolutely estatic!!!!!!!!!! We were only a few hundred yards from the club so the guys heard the shot and called me on my cell to see what the deal was. They came and got the deer and helped cleaned him. A local man that we all knew had lost his job came by and asked if anyone had any meat that was "scrap" that he would gladly take it. As expected, Tyler pulled me to the side and asked if we could give the man a shoulder or a ham, and I replied " we have the whole season buddy, you do what your heart tells you to do". With a big grin :D , Tyler ran up to the fellow and said "mister, you got a cooler?" "Yes I do" he replied. Tyler said, "Sir, would you like one of my deer? You can have the one hanging right there or I have a doe in the walk in cooler that I killed this morning, you can have either one you want". He may not be a trophy to some folks but he's a buck that I will never forget  .

We were all done by 1:00 and decided to call it a day. We came home, showered and Tyler offered to buy me lunch so we went to town to have a bite and chit-chat. He looked at me and asked," Dad, I'm the luckiest kid in the world, I hope that you know how much I love you. He went on to talk about how he was going to take me hunting when he gets his license in 5 years  . 5 YEARS  , dang I'm getting old
God Bless !!!!!!!!!

Don't worry about others scoring or comparing your bucks ... trophy is in the eye of the beholder .
