First blood of 2009
Hello all,
I've been away until this weekend with a job assignment in the Mount Forest / Owen Sound area and unable to make it home for the past two weeks. Congratulations to all the successful hunters so far this season and here's to the best of luck for everyone~!
Today was the first day that I have been able to get out since the opener .. I headed out to area 92 for a morning hunt and although I didnt see any deer I enjoyed a beautiful sunrise.
I headed home for a quick Thanksgiving "Lunch" as my girlfriend seems to understand the hunting fever that I come down with every October. I headed out to my area 87 property and decided to hunt one of the corn field edges where I had seen several deer traveling during turkey season .. Like this fella in the spring;
I carved a new spot and did not factor in the heavy foliage this time of year and was limited to only two shot opportunities .. This was my best option;
At about 5:30 I could hear what I thought to be one of the 3000 squirrels that had been running around me throughout the afternoon. I turned my attention to the noise and soon could make out the distinct shape of the head of a deer in the heavy brush. The deer was moving behind me and I figured that it would pass behind me leaving me without a shot .. I watched as it slowly turned and came out to the corn field edge. I could now see that it was a fork horn. He turned towards me and walked along the edge, eventually stepping into into my shooting lane. I had left my range finder at home but I didnt figure the distance to be more than 15 yards. I held the 20 pin low and touched her off hearing that unmistakable "thwack" of the bolt making contact. The buck jumped straight into the air and then bolted down the field edge eventually out of sight. I waited 35 minutes before climbing down. I located my bolt which did have blood on it but I was a little concerned as it was not completely covered, I noticed hair as well in the same area.
I sat down at the base of a tree and waited another 30 minutes before starting my trail. I couldnt help but be reminded that I had inherited Red Label's (God rest his soul) tree climber and that it has brought me a vast amount of luck over the years;
In the first 45-50 yards I could not locate any blood and started to get worried that I had messed the shot .. I then located some blood;
As I stood at the first blood I had located pondering whether I should leave the deer longer I could see what I thought was a large rock about 30 yards ahead of me;
Closer inspection gave me alot of relief;
I took a couple of pics;
Tagged him up and got down to the business of field dressing;
Cheers,
Robin

I was using the G5 3 blage - This is the first deer that I have hit with them. I was giving them a test. I should have added that my shot was a prefect double lung. Thought I would have seen more blood than I did.sumner4991 wrote:Congrats on a fine buck! I love the pictures and the story.
Which broadhead did you use?
