GA Hunter kills 573 lb. bear with crossbow
A week ago last Saturday, a GA hunter killed a 573 lb. black bear in Wilmer Co., up in N. GA. Lots of pics were posted, but I can't figure out how to link them. The bow was a Horton and it dropped the bear with one well-placed shot from a tree stand. It was an impressive looking bear, but the coat was thin, probably due to our hot weather. The claws on the front paws were as long as the guy's index finger. I'd sure not have wanted to face the bear head on responding to a predator call with anything smaller than a .45-70. This was just a few pounds shy of a record weight bear in GA.

That is a big one. Every couple of years I seem to be hearing of 500 plus pound bears being killed in Georgia. I've only seen about a dozen here in all of my life of hunting. The only one that I have killed was 150 pounds in Gilmer county. Don't know that I would ever shoot another one. Too much work!
Why ride when you can walk!

And man, let me tell you ... taking care of a 500 lb. or more bear kill in these hot, humid southern climes is MAJOR WORK.groundpounder wrote: The only one that I have killed was 150 pounds in Gilmer county. Don't know that I would ever shoot another one. Too much work!
That's why I let guest hunters go after the big ones.
Little ones are better eating, anyway.
