Do you Grunt before shooting a walking deer?

Post by TNXBow »

When shooting my Exomax at a walking deer I adjust my shot to compensate for the movement of the deer. I am considering starting to Grunt to get the deer to stop, then shoot. I am interested in learning what your approach is when a deer comes walking by.

I don't make any noise before shooting a deer unless I absolutely have to.

It should be remembered that a "stopped" deer is an alert deer ... and one primed to take off!

depends on the speed they are walking and the distance.. under 15 yards it doesnt really matter. If out past 20 yards I go bah lightly at first to try to make them stop. Its no point in stopping a deer out past 40 yards since they will be alert and jump the bow. Now with a rifle or ML'er its different though

I want them to stop if they're moving in order to avoid having to lead them, because you're adding too many variables to the shooting equation. When I let a little 'Mah' out and they stop, it's just like shooting my 3D target. I get the same sight picture.

A static target is a far better one than a moving one at any time.

I always try and stop them, unless it is an easy shot...last year I had a 15 inch opening to shoot my buck, so I actually yelled HEY! stopped him, shot him, and retrieved him 20 yards away.

20 and under no need to stop them. BUT... you still need to aim a little forward. Out past that I BAHH to stop them.

My firm belief that a lot of the "hit him a little too far back" shots are from shooting at walking deer.

The split second it takes to decide to shoot, aim, pull the trigger and the arrow gets there the deer has moved enough to hit further back. Sometimes TOO far back.

I have NEVER had a deer be extra alert from a BAHH. Everyone that I have stopped (7 to 42 yards) and shot at did not move until the arrow hit them.

ANOTHER DEER ANATOMY VIEW..

Image

It doesn't take much to get back past mid-section and then we are in BIG trouble..

Like others have suggested, I say baah...they stop... I shoot.... :D I don't believe it makes them that alert...

I can never remember to say anything! I'm working on it as I shoot in the backyard. I'm also trying to break the bad habit of looking up once I pull the trigger. I think it's more logical to watch throught the scope to see where the arrow hits (hopefully). I always look up quickly to see what the deer is going to do.
