as promised my buck pictures and story.

Post by catcher »

He is not the biggest racked deer in the woods. But he is one of three Bucks I was after this year. He is a four year old and actually last year his tines were longer. But he was not blessed with good antler genetics and I really did not want him in the heard. And I could not beleive how short his tines were this year compared to last. I had to do somethig to get him I usually do not do but it worked this time. He was showing up late to my blind every afternoon and was driving me crazy. So with the unusually weird winds this year I made a decision on Sunday early afternoon to go to the bedding area on my property and set up a doghouse blind. So with the wind in my face I quickly got in and set up and out hopefully not spooking to much deer out of there. I then returned around 5:00 p.m. and settled in hoping the deer were stageing in the thick stuff before coming out to feed just before dark. It was about 6: 20 I heard some grass move and then he appeared about 18 yards from me looking directly at the new blind that was there. He stared at me for a few minutes and slowly started to walk away but was fully alert so I did not bother to stop him and I let him have it. It was slightly facing me and the shot took out one lung and the liver. He took off running and I was trying to stick my fat head out the little hole in those blinds to hear where he went. Luckily as I got my head out to listen I heard him stumbling and go down. Even though I heard him go down I tried to stay put for awhile but it was killing me to wait. So I went to go look for the arrow but since I was at ground level and it was a complete pass thru I could not find it anywhere. Since I was sure I heard him go down I took up the trail before it got dark. After about 10 yards or so I found some blood and then some more. But it was high lung and was not pouring out. More like every bound he would leave a little splash on the grass. Then I came up on him and I was really impressed with the size of him. One quick tug on his antlers I realized I was going to need help. So I went home and got the camera and the neighbor and off back to the woods to get him. Jerked the guts out of him and brought him in the garage to weigh him. We were pleased to see that he weighrd 223 pounds. And after proceesing him last night I know why he weighed so much. This was by far the fattest deer I have shot as far as fat wise. Under his skin was over an inch of fat and it was like skinning a bear. I think it because that I shot him before the rut and he had not had a chance to burn it off chasing all the girls around yet. Man if that is all it takes to loose some weight I am going have to try that out. He is 9 pointer with a 19 inch inside spread and I shot him with a four bladed wasp 100 grain head with a Boo string and crazyfarmers arrow. He went a total of 65 yards from shot to pile up. Hope you enjoy the pics. One is at the place were I found him and the other is with the kids in the yard the following day before I brought him in to be processed.

If he didn't have a rack on him I'd be wondering if one of your neighbours was missing a Clydesdale!!!!

I was going to mention that as well. I am 6 foot 1 inch 225 pounds and growing. Well with all this meat it does not take long. Like I said I got to start chasing the girls to loose a few pounds.

 :D That is a great deer and a story with a picture to match.

Thank you for your story. I was so interested because I have just
recently started hunting out of a ground blind and have some concerns
about how older bucks react to ground blinds.

I actually thought I was a decent hunter until I came to this forum and
started to really learn from people like you. :D
