I need the forum witchdoctor.

Post by prossbow »

I think I am jinxed, or my Vortex. I've been in my blind for 4 mornings and only 1 eve. The first morn(just before sun-up) of the season I saw a really good silhouette, the wind wasn't great and up went the tail and gone...couldn't tell if it was a buck or a doe, it ran about 25yds and stopped and made a wicked blow but it had an odd screech at the end, which I've never heard before. I hunted that night and then 3 mornings since (due to shift work) and haven't seen hide nor hair of anything (but a porcupine that I was tempted to waste just to break the Vortex's cherry, but refrained) since.

Anyone have a secret blessing they'd like to share?

ps. more of and update of how my season has gone thus far, but ya can't help but wonder.

Welcome to the forum! :D

I don't know how long you've been hunting, but there's nothing all that unusual about not getting a shot for five sits in a row ... or even not seeing anything.

Hang in there. Your moment will come. 8)

Don't let it get you down. When you least expect it one will show up. Patience is a big part of the hunt. Keep going out and you will be rewarded.

I like to use a stand for 2 or 3 days then give it a rest for a week or so. I think deer will pattern you. They learn to avoid the stand (or blind) if you use it at the same time(s) every day. They might come by at other times, but they will avoid it at the times you are frequently in it (or going in/out of the area.
The exception is my food plot & feeder location, but I have a stand and a blind at that location and if I hunt it more than 2 days a week I switch up using the stand & blind and use different routes to go in & out.

Sounds like it made a "snort wheeze" call. I have seen it on T.V. and have had a friend use it and it work for him but I have never actually heard it or tried it.

Do not listen to any of the posters above. They have no idea what they are talking about.

You are indeed cursed and may never get to pull the trigger this season unless that curse is lifted.

We here at Excalibur Kids are having a "curse lifting" special this month and for every donation of goods offered we will perform a "curse lifting" ritual that involves grizz running naked in front of a very large black bear who is high on polk berries. :D

No it's not a curse. It's more basic than that. You're using the wrong crossbow. Rumor has it that for your first crossbow deer, you must be using an Exocet.

I'm a prime example, I owned a Wolverine for over ten years and never got a deer. As soon as I got my Exocet in 2001, I shot my biggest archery buck to date.

Of course the reason I never shot a deer with the Wolverine was because I only used it for target practice.

Hang in there, with patience and perserverance you too will succeed.

My advice... get a tattoo of the Excalibur logo. I did, & it's brought me some serious critter-baggin' mojo this hunting season. Plus, it looks good

I say mature doe. Most mature bucks will when surprized with human scent will let out a grunt of sorts as the flee with the sound of hooves stomping away, if its a wooded or thick area you can sometimes hear the rack bouncing of the limbs as he flees. kinda sound like a pool stick getting dragged down a picket fence. . They dont want to give the position away at all and if they had it their way with no sound what so ever. If they see you coming they will just turn and duck and hide and weave threw the bush and never make a sound . A doe will stand and blow and blow warning to all..just my 2 cents. Im not a witch doctor but ....ginx be off...there you go bro..

thanks guys, like I said it was more of an update of how my season is unfolding. I don't have much crossbow wisdom to share due to lack of experience but I love the interaction of this group and enjoy being a part of it.

Thanks for the insight, chuckles and encouragement.
