What Says "Winter Is Coming!" To You?

Post by Grizzly Adam »

I just heard the flute-like tones of Tundra Swan flying overhead ... the first this year ... and I'll hear many thousands more such tones over the next several months.

Here in East Carolina, the arrival of the Tundra Swans says "Winter is coming!"

The linked video was shot near where I live, and gives a good idea of what it looks like around here when the swans come in. I just wish they'd canned the music and recorded the honking! Just imagine!

What tells the tale of coming winter for you? :D

Wood on the deck for the Swede's morning fire in the wood burning stove is always a prelude to winter here at our house.

Around here the old timers used to say you won,t get winter untill the swamps are full of water. Well the swamps are starting to fill up so winter can,t be to far away. The cobs are low on the corn, and there was a very small crop of evergreen cones this year so it looks like a winter that will be cold with very little snow. The wooley bears are also a little black on the front and the back with lots of brown in the middle, Which meens a mild winter.

"What says".....It's more like "My wife says",

" Dale.... the leaves are done falling..... so it' s time for you to clean

them all up around the house so you don't keep tracking them in

the house",..... :P

"What says".......Is probability the smell of my fireplace. :D

The old Indian told me when he came to visit, "Bad hard winter come." I asked why and he said because my wood pile is so big. Well, I do have a 7 year supply all cut, split and stacked. Maybe old Indian is wise after all?!

I can be hard to pick a sign here in southern Ohio. Our weather can be really variable (and has been so far this fall). T-shirt weather one day, long johns the next. :(
I have noticed a few morning and evening "underdressed" occasions recently, though. Walk in carrying my top layer of clothing in my pack, get in the stand or blind and after a short "cool down" period put the top layer on. Half an hour later I'm cold!!!!!!!!! Not sure if winter is coming - or if winter is here!

Winter must be coming. I walked into a sports store tonight for a carabiner and walked out 5 minutes later with 2 balaclavas and 2 pairs of snowshoes - 1 of them a Christmas present for the wife. I couldn't help it. I've wanted snowshoes for the whole family for years and needed 2 more pairs and these were $50 off each. Let it snow!

:) :) Winter comes each year when I say!!!!( yeh right it would never come if up to me) Or when Old Buck has all his outside chores done, wood cut and split, leaves raked, garden tilled,Christmas lights and decorations up and out, snowblower out and ready to go. He's had it easier this year because a lot of the chores have been spread over a longer time with the mild weather.
