finally saw a deer.......... and shot it!

Post by hikerman »

This fall it has been really hard to get out hunting,
I have not seen any deer either.
Usually I hunt in the forest on the ground and tire to get them on their way out.
Out of frustration from not seeing deer I decide to setup to the field edge. I was hoping to see where they are coming out. At first I only see turkeys 10' away feeding three of them are looking at me because they think my shooting is there pathway and way wont I move.
Where are they in turkey season,
Later about 4:45pm I spot the buck looking down in my direction form top of a ridge. I grunt at him but he doesn't come down. He just wanders off south down the field.
I figure he was looking for some does.
The next day I decide to setup in the tree line south of the ridge that he came across. I made some ground cover behind some pines trees with a spotting lane and a shooting lane.
Sure enough around the same time I see this buck coming across the ridge looks down where I was yesterday and then starts toward me.
As he passes my spotting lane I get into position. He crosses into my shooting lane stops 25 yards away and stairs right at me. I froze; the only thing going through my head is LOOK AWAY!!!Soon as he did I pulled the trigger.
I could see the arrow hit and new it was a good shot. He ran looped back and went down 60-70 yards.
What luck!
What a rush!

Sometimes I would say "better to be lucky than good". But this wasn't luck. You were out there, you observed, you made a plan and you made the shot.....on a real nice buck.

Congrats.
