Looks like our season will be over, before it starts.

Post by Island Hunter »

It´s looking like our 2010 spring shrimp season is in jeopardy, thanks to the BP oil spill in the gulf of Mexico.
I live on a barrier island, on the west side of the Ms River, south of New Orleans, (Grand Isle), and we were hoping that the oil slick would stay on the east side, well earlier we were told that a sheen was spotted off of the Island. Not good news for us, because our spring season shrimp are still too small to harvest, due to colder than normal temps down here. If this oil gets into the marshes, it will devastate the crop. We have been waiting all winter to go back to work, but it looks like it won´t be shrimping. It will be deploying oil booms, to stop the advance of the slick. It was bad enough that it was on the east side, because all of the boats from that side would have to cross the river for them to make living. Thus putting more boats here making the pie shares smaller for everyone. Now that it is crossing to the west side no one will be able to make a living. This will probably put a damper on my hunting this fall and winter. All we can do is hope and pray the the oil stays away. I have seen the power of prayer on this forum, and am asking that you all help us pray that this tragedy is avoided.
Thanks in advance for you prayers.

Prayers from Nova Scotia, buddy. Fishing is a gamble at the best of times. I was a fisherman until my body failed me. And yes, it will be tough, but prayers and courage will bring you through it.

Prayers and best wishes. Hear they are lowering a cone to capture escaping oil as we speak. My fingers are crossed for it's effectiveness.
