Short vs Long Arrows

Post by OkXbowHunter »

I'm wondering if anyone here has experimented with a tad shorter arrows out of their Excaliburs or have used 22" long arrows?

Seems like it would be a fun experiment. If someone has, what experiences have you had?

Just wondering how an 18" arrow would perform vs a 20" vs a 22".

I have piddled around some with the short & long arrows. I started off with 26" 2219 & it was way out past the strirrup but shot well with field pts. I cut several of them down an inch at a time & when it was all over there weren't 1/4" diff in the groups from 10 yds to 50 yds. Now if'en you did the inch at a time & changed yer vanes on length & fletch angles might be a bigger diff in group sizes

I am presently shooting Carbon Express Maxima Hunters that have been cut down to 19". I see no difference between 19 and 20". When I damage enough shafts or fletchings I will go to 18".

With my Ibex I found it likes a 18" arrow. After damaging some arrows cutting those down. They just shot so good i cut the rest down.

hmmm? 18" and 17" arrows from excaliburs, didn't think you could go any shorter in them....i might have to try a shorter arrow to gain some FPS without changing any arrow conponets....2" = 25gr with my 2117's, not much but a little.......bob

Over the years I've shot arrows ranging from 20" to as short as 16" (with field points only - there would be clearance issues with broadheads) and can see no difference in accuracy.
The 16" arrow had split at the insert and I cut it down for an "unloader".

I currently shoot 18½" 2215 aluminum arrows in my Phoenix. The length was reduced to achieve the finished weight I wanted.

yeah i thought bout dropping 50gr from my 550gr arrows to get a little more flater trajectory from them, maybe shortening them up will give me what i want without losing any weight up front....but don't want to go below 20% FOC, i'm at 21.4 now and love there performance out to 50 yds  ........bob

My vixen using 18" arrow is out by the limbs & even if i cut it back more the riser cutout will clear most any BH i use. 1 1/2" on coc G5 striker is 1/4" too wide fer riser cutout so it has to stay forward of the limbs.

I've been shooting some 22" carbon Express Maxima Hunters with wt.forward technologht (wraps or dip to a std. shaft I believe). I would always lean toward the longer arrow as I believe it would have more inherent accuracy, all else being equal, and better downrange kinetic energy.
