Had a heart scare!

Post by groundpounder »

Sunday night was spent in the ER! While relaxing at the house watching a movie with my wife I had a tightness in the chest around 8 pm. Just thought it was a muscle cramp and kind blew it off. Went back to watching the movie and noticed I could really feel my heart beating but again didn't think too much of it. When my wife was leaning against me and really noticed it now too we looked into it. My girls have a stethescope and we got it to get a better hear and my beat was all over the place. Not messing around with it now made the trip to the ER and was immediately admitted shortly after 9 pm. Come to find out I was experiencing Atrial Fibrillation. Top chambers were fibrillating while bottom ones were beating sparatically. At 11 pm I felt like a switch was flipped and my heart rate went back to normal finally. I had to stay the night for observations and had no more episodes. I have to go in Thursday for some more testing with the cardio specialist. I'm 38 and in excellent shape and health otherwise. No family history of it and never experienced anything like it. Not something I was expecting at all! Just thought I would share whats going on with me right now.

Oh wow, I hope you are ok and continue to stay that way! I have a friend at work that had an episode like that twice now and still won't go in and get checked out... Being a first responder at my shop, I told him I don't want to be that guy if I don't have to be. My thoughts are with you!
The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea, they are given into your hands. Gen 9:2

Todd I hope all will be well with you.

Just wondering out loud, you didn't drink an excessive amount of coffee or any highly caffeinated drink, prior to the episode, did you?

I know that high levels of caffeine will play havoc with the rhythm of the heart.

I'm a first responder at work too. That is partly why I went ahead to the hospital versus being stubborn. If I was helping anyone and they sounded like I did I would have been sending them straight to the hospital.

No and that was asked by the doctors. Had my normal coffee in the morning and soda at lunch and that was it. This happened at 8 pm.

Thanks everyone! Hoping it will never come back!

I had a similar issue. Had all test's done to see what was up. @ the end of the day it was found I have a low hear beat. I guess I will live longer then!! :)

Glad to hear that you're alright. Hope it was just a one time thing. You'll be in my Families thoughts and prayers. Keep us informed of what, if anything, they find!
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4

Todd good to go to the ER.

I used to be an RN. I had unstable angina for a couple weeks. Ended up in the local ER and they did a 15 lead ECG not just 12 lead. I was in an ambulance to Regina in minutes.

Took 3 days to thin my blood so had an angoplasty and a stent put in. The Doc said it was genetic defect. That was 11 years ago. Still going strong. Dad and Oldest 2 brothers had many problems. I was 42 at the time, same age as my Dad's first heart attack and same age as my late brothers last heart attack.

As I was taught and have seen to many times. MEN try to ignore the signs and symptoms of Heart Attack. They will wright it off as gas, nausea, heartburn etc.

This semi Macho additude leads to wasting valuable time getting treatment.

I remember waking up drenched in sweat, dull pain in chest and bad pain in the back. weird feeling in left arm under the pit to elbow. Felt fine the would return. I should have phoned 911 not driven 40 miles to hospital. that is another story

I have had to force people to go get checked out, none of them regretted it!!

Take the time to take First Aid CPR please.

I had an episode where my heart was skipping beats this summer. Worried me enough to call my doctor and make a trip to his office that same morning.
All tests were well within normal range and the heart resumed normal operation a few hours later.
Then a few days later it happened again.
My wife figured it out right away, and my doctor confirmed she was most likely correct. It was from drinking a new tea I had ordered - it contained ginseng!

Hope your tests come out good, but you might want to think back to what you had to eat and drink that day.
