Axiom Scores. One Deer, Many Firsts

Post by OkXbowHunter »

I can't tell how good it was to be setting in my treestand on opening mornong of the Oklahoma Archery Season. It was like coming home again!

I sit until 11 a.m. this morning and didn't see anything other than squirrels and Crows.

The day got really warm so I was reluctant to go to another stand for the evening, but I made myself get out of the pickup and go. Boy, it was hot and there was a hole in the tree limbs to the West of me. The sun bore down on the back of my neck for several hours until the Sun went behind the trees around 6.

Around 7, it was just getting that time when the woods start settling down and you think you're about to see deer.

Which, I did. This young Doe came mozzying up through the woods with her fawn. I knew she was a small one and I normally would have passed her up. But I wanted to try out my new Axiom and the new Slick Trick broadheads. Plus, I just plain like to eat venison.

I was prepared to shoot her at 30 but at the last minute, she made a beeline across the little opening and came directly at my stand. At around 18 yards I bleated and she turned just a little. I already had the scope on her and put the crosshairs very low and let fly. I watched the Firenock hit her just behind the shoulder, about halfway up. Just where I like to hit 'em.

She ran dead away for nearly 100 yards before crashing. I couldn't believe she ran that far, but it happens sometimes.

This was a first for me on several accounts.

1st deer with my Excalibur Axiom
1st deer with Slick Tricks
1st deer using FireNocks
1st deer taken in Oklahoma Archery season with a Crossbow
1st time I've actually taken a deer on the Archery opener

Getting her cut up so I can go do it all over in the morning!

(Sorry about the Pic. I forgot my camera in my other pickup and had to take a pic of her in the bed after I got home)

Congratulations. Great story. Happy BBQing.

For a minute there I thought I was looking at the bed of my pickup truck(minus the doe). I have a 2001 Ram that is the same color and has that same "broken in" look just like yours.

That's the bed of my 2000 Silverado 2wd pickup. It has over 271,000 miles and I'm the original owner. I drive it hunting more than I do my 2006 Z71. Get's better mileage and I don't mind getting the bed messy!

About the only time I take the Z71 is if muddy conditions are likely or I'm pulling my boat. It only has 82,000 miles on it. :)
