First 2010 Ontario Meat Buck

Post by korey99 »

Went out yesterday evening for my first 2010 hunt at about 4PM. I thought I'd suck it up, put the raingear on, and brave the elements! Lucky for me the rain began to taper off, so it really wasn't that bad out there. I had barely climbed the ladder stand, was looking for a place to put my fanny pack, and caught movement out of the corner of my eye, about 30 yards out. That's good timing! Unfortunately it turned out to be a little button buck, and he continued to meander up the trail towards my stand, ending up right in front of my stand, 10 yards out. I had MANY opportunities to fill the freezer with him, but managed to keep my composure, hoping mamma would soon be following. He hung around for about an hour, snacking on leaves and some spilled soy beans at the edge of the field. No doe ever showed. I thought that was a little weird, but perhaps she was the victim of a car or other circumstance...who knows.

The little guy was entertaining to watch, to say the least. I kept an eye on him while I continued to scan the field and trails to something a little larger. After a while, I noticed him snap his head up and look towards the road where my vehicle was parked - I wasn't sure if he saw a car drive by or what, but he slowly marched towards whatever he saw, which was out of my sightline. I didn't really pay too much attention to it at the time. I continued to scan my regular spots, every so often taking a glance to the way the little buck headed. About 5 minutes later, I saw a deer body in that general direction, initially thinking it was the fawn still hanging around - until a noticed a small rack on him! Show time! A little 5 pointer was about 20 yards out at the edge of the field, and I began to raise the Vortex slowly to put the crosshairs on the vitals. I didn't want to shoot right away, as I figured he'd proceed right down the trail in front of me (from which the fawn came) - which would have made for a nice 10 yard shot. Of course, a sudden wind change put that plan in the trash! As the wind shifted to blow across my neck in his direction, he lifted his head quickly, becoming very alert and edgy. He then began doing the distinct stiff legged march while scanning for the source of the stink (me!). I figured I'd better let him have it before he decided to hightail it out of there. Since the scope was on him the entire time, it was a very quick process. I sailed a GTII with the Slick Trick and Lumenok through the vitals. He took off with blood POURING from him - only traveling about 50 yards before piling up.

Awesome day of hunting to open the 2010 season. A full freezer after 1.5 hours of hunting - this makes up for all of those days sitting in a tree and not seeing squat - you never know when it's going to all come together!

Good luck to all this season.

Korey
