Michigan buck down

Post by gerald strine »

Oct 2nd 5:45 am leave car for stand a spot on the ground utilizing natural cover for somewhat of a ground blind. I cut off the path to early going around the new wind falls that were not their last year and in the darkness have a hard time finding the spot to sit from this new approach angel end up walking 3/4 of a circle around my stand site up wind no less wonderful but I find it at last. I do not use trail markers here it is state land heavy hunted markers put other hunters in your spot .
I hunted here yesterday for 9 hours and had a snort before day break but no Deer seen all day but I have faith it is a good spot.
After sitting 3 hours I see patches of Deer 80 plus yards away and getting closer at 65 yards I see it is a buck getting closer most likely a 6 point he gets to 40 yards and hangs up still to far then goes back were he came from I keep watching and he starts coming back ten minuets later with a 2nd Deer shadow following must be a Doe he does not want to leave , he stays on the same run as before never getting closer than 40 yards to far for me he is now obscured by brush so I check on the 2nd Deer and find it has a Radar lock on me piercing dark eyes large satellite dish ears locked in.
I do my best statue imitation with a racing heart for several minuets until this Deer decides he was imagining things it is also a buck but a little smaller. He starts walking and pauses at 35 yards pre ranged the day before still to far for my 30 yard personal set limit but my will is weak I have a solid hold his head is behind a tree and he has relaxed THUMP/ CRACK the bolt is launched he takes off several branches are herd breaking, deep exhale breath what was that site picture again it was good I know it was I think of course it was that crack was the bolt hitting a tree after a pass through it had to be I will give it a hour.
The longest hour passes with adrenalin jitters, cold pizza and hot tea .
I look for blood and do not find it lest go to the last breaking branch sound should be about here a quick scan and I see a white belly yes yes yes a nice 5 point,a first buck with a crossbow on its second hunt. Prayers sent.
Equinox,fire bolts,slick trick 175 grain B.H. 50 yard run.
Hit a bit forward entered in the mussel of the arm came out through the opposite shoulder blade where it joins the neck 2 pieces of the bolt recovered in the Deer.
Butchered all day Sunday horn soup tonight :D

Nice looking buck, big body. Good picture . . .didn't know we could post a large format picture.

Double clicking on the picture in this case, makes it smaller.

That's a Super looking 5 pointer! Looks to have a big body on 'em!

Nice packaging on the meat. Just one question. What parts are in the packaged labeled "Birds" and what kind of Birds, other than Buzzards, would eat Deer parts in the backyard? Finches?
Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die. Gen 27:3-4
