Crossbow Deer Harvest Numbers

Post by Woody Williams »

I'm looking for the latest in crossbow deer harvest numbers by state/provinces that have full inclusion.

So far I have ..

Virginia - 9,456

Tennessee – 6,198

Georgia – 9,564 (2005-06) Georgia combines all archery now

Maryland – 3,585

Arkansas – 13,175

Michigan - 25,000

Ohio – 49,057

Pennsylvania – ?

New Jersey - ?

Ontario - ?

ETC - ?

Can anyone here help fill in the blanks and add whatever state/province that you can?

Are those last years (2009) harvest numbers you have now?

I don't think Ontario tracks these figures. I could be wrong though.

I would agree with you, Ontario does not track which weapon they are killed with.

Twenty five thousand crossbow deer ain't too shabby for Michigan's first year. :D
And we're just getting started here. I would've bought one last year but didn't find out that Michigan made them legal until deer season was almost over. In the month leading up to this year's October 1st Archery season start I made a couple dozen trips to local hunting shops in my area. Every time that I was at an archery counter I noticed that 25%-30% of the customers were engaged in the purchase and post-purchase setup of crossbow equipment. The word is finally spreading.

It is amazing how politics and ignorance have kept them from legal use all these years. Hopefully other crossbow restrictive states will eventually start looking at the facts and thus change their laws too.

i couldn't find the numbers for PA after the first full incultion year last year, but it was only a few % over the year before harvast numbers....so the sky didn't fall on PA's head after all, but we still have a sunset clause in place for the 2012 season to possibly get it turned back to disabled permit use only but i don't think it will happen....PA has had almost 1 million hunting license sold each year for many years now and PA still has deer here........bob

Pennsylvania doesn't track by crossbow. I read something that they're only tracking via archery and that includes both horizontal and vertical bows.

I saw where they stated that the "archery take" was up 13% to 30% in given areas. How much of that can be attributed to crossbows is unknown.

I got this back from the PGC
Last season in Pennsylvania, archery license sales climbed 5.7 percent.

" In those 19 WMUs outside of the three urban areas (2B, 5C, 5D), the 2009-10 archery harvest increased 13 percent (41,230 in 2008-09 to 46,470 in 2009-10). The proportion of the archery harvest taken by crossbows in the 19 WMUs increased from 15 percent to 30 percent (6,184 of 41,230 in 2008-09; 13,940 of 46,470 in 2009-10). Crossbows have been legal in urban WMUs of 2B, 5C, and 5D since 2004."
So, PA is tracking crossbow kills. Crossbow kills more than doubled in Pennsylvania since the full inclusion. My prediction is that in the not so distant future Pennsylvania will rival Ohio in number of archery deer kills - crossbows and vertical bows.

Then this from the man that almost stopped crossbows in PA..
"Clearly, crossbows had an impact last season," said Ron Weaner, a member of the Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners, who was among the minority to vote against full inclusion of crossbows in the archery deer season last year.

I just finished hunting Wisconsin...They do not track which type of bow is used just the total archery kill at the end of the season. :D
