This guy came in around 7:30 am and he was out around 70 yards and feeding away from me, skirting my setup. It rained hard last night and there was a lot of water falling from the trees, so I never heard him come in. I gave a few soft grunts trying to get his attention, but no luck. I could see him stop once in a while but he kept moving away.
I figured that maybe he couldn't hear me over the falling rain drops, so I let out a loud grunt, almost roaring at him. His head snapped up and he began to look around. I gave him another and he wheeled around in my direction.
He was coming in circling down wind of me. When he got behind some brush at 20 yards I drew back the Matthews. He stepped into a clearing at 18 yards, but was slightly quartered to me. I felt a slight gust of wind on the back of my neck and his head snapped up. I figured he was about to bust, so I picked a spot near the back of his shoulder and let er go.
He turned on his heels and ran back about 60 yards crashing all the way. I found him right where I last saw him. Not a big rack by any means but a good size body for a back woods buck.
The arrow went through but the shaft got broken off at the fletch. I found the fletch end of the arrow in him when I dressed him out.
I went back to the house to grab the bike to haul him out. What a difference it is to have some horse power to pull them out. I may have to bring it back to Ontario for my two week hunt there.
