SCORE!!!!

Post by Kelley »

Climbed into my one of my ladder stands at 5:00PM yesterday afternoon. At 5:35 I see movement in the bushes about 75 yards away. Slowly into field came a mature doe, 2, 1 year old young doe, and a fawn. It took 20 minutes for the big doe to meander into my comfort range. She stopped at 33 yards to feed on acorns at the edge of the field and offer me a broadside shot. At 5:55PM I pulled the trigger and after a 30 yard run she piled up in the field. Double lung shot. My trusty Exocet, Easton arrow, and 100g Spitfire had once again put meat on the table as well as a smile on my face. This was my 14th time in a stand since the 1st of Oct. Had only seen 3 other deer and none presented a ethical shot. We are 14 inches below normal rainfall here in Southern Illinois and no water in the area I have permission to hunt. Hopefully we will get rain soon and the rut will be normal with deer everywhere as in the past. By this time last year I had 3 in the freezer with 1 opening day and 1 on day 2 and the 3rd on day 9.

Congrats on the doe. If you are hunting a field, you may want to check your woods. It was really dry here this year as well, but we've got the best acorn crop in a decade or more. The deer have no reason to come out to the fields at all. There is more food than they can eat in the woods around here.

Pictures will have to come on the next one. Forgot camera and has been so warm here had to work her up last night. Haven't buried the head, legs, and skin if you want pictures of that.

Congrats Kelley on the deer. Just curious, what string was on your Exocet?
Was it a orange and bronze coloured one by any chance?
