Great trip

Post by groundpounder »

I took my friend Jonathan on a WMA hunt I do to the mountains every year. I tried going earlier during archery season but they had the gate closed to where I like to go. This is a place where two rivers come together. This was their first rifle hunt and it was an either sex hunt. They are opening the gates for the rifle hunts I learn. I toted my kayak and my waders not sure of the availability to cross the rivers with all of the recent rain. So when we first get there and survey the river as best we can in the dark, didn't think it was too bad. So we wader up and walk upstream a ways to a good crossing. With only getting partially in we realize its a bit faster and swifter than I feel comfortable with in crossing. Plan B now. Jonathan hunts on this side of the river but upstream a bit farther. I work my way back to the truck and put the kayak in and go up the other river. Get to my spot but with enough light now where I don't need a flashlight. At 9:00 I had two does get right in on me within about 20 yards before I spot them. When they get behind a downed tree and blocked from view I ready. As soon as the larger doe steps out and broad side I make an easy 15 yard shot. At 10:45 Jonathan shoots a nice 8 point. His first nice buck since I've gotten him into hunting. This ones going on the wall! The intereting part to the hunt now is how I got my deer out. I had taken a large life jacket to use as one plan but didn't see the need after simply laying the doe across the front of my kayak. It was only a few hundred yards downstream in some deep but slower moving water so easy traveling. Here are some pics of the trip!

Yes I try and get up there every year. The last few years we have been using a John boat though. Or just waders when we can. The John boat is a hassle though and the kayak is much easier to get around  They have another quality buck hunt(4 on one side) in a couple of weeks and I'll be back.
