How to retrieve deer from river!

Post by Riflemanz »

My hunting buddy bryan shot an 8pt buck last night and the blood trail ran out.We went first thing this morning and did a sweeping pattern of the area.I came up to the river and i see what looks like a brown rock floating in the middle of it.I get closer and can see its a deer with horns below the waterline.I told Bryan i found your deer and how in the hell are you going to get it out of the middle of the river? He finds a large log near the bank and wakes up the resident racoon living inside it to vacate the log so he can go swimming. It took us 3 hours to get this deer back to our trucks.Thank GOD for Bryans honda 4x4 with winch to do most of the work.We had 0 blood trail after 50yds to go on.The deer was hit thru the liver and went 2 tenths of a mile.We looked long and hard and we recovered the animal.

Nice job! I used my kayak on my last one. I have waded chest deep without waders in some cold water before too!

Glad you got him out. That's one hunt you guys won't forget. I wonder how big of a Labrador retriever it would take to bring in a deer? :? Gary

Funny you mention that. The first week of bow season I shot a nice little 7 point. I was hunting approx. 25 yards from a fairly large river. Long story short, i put an arrow into this guy and he takes off, straight to the river bank. The buck pauses for a moment and then dissapears. I thought for a second he would be running along the river but I was not that lucky. I hear a large splash and take off after him. This guy attempted to swim his way across. Made it about 30 yards from me and keeled over, gaining speed as he is floating down the river. I run about 200 yards downstream drop my bow, cell, wallet and ditch the shirt and start wading. The water wasn't to bad 'till I hit my manhood, continuing to wade further out the water reached my chest. I managed to grab the buck by the tail as he was going by and this point I am shoulder deep. The fun didn't end there, I struggled to get this guy up the slippery bank and ended up getting the landowner to give me a lift.

I guess some you have to work to recover while some you just drive up to.
