Another Deer On The Hook

Post by strider23 »

I decided last evening that I would make a RARE morning hunt appearance. I'm a night owl so when 5:30am alarm came around I had to hit the snooze button at least 3 times. By the time that I got out of bed it was 5:50am. If I wanted to get into my stand by the hour before 7:30am time line then I had better get a move on.

Since I cut myself short on time I didn't get to make any breakfast or coffee (bummer). Thanks a million for Tim Horton's Drive Thru's. In a matter of moments I had my flaming hot coffee and donut and I was on my way. I make it to my parking area and hike into to where I will hunt at. After I climb into my stand the creative side of my brain tells me about how much fun I'll have while hunting today. The rational side tells me that I should be home in my warm bed with my wife at my side. Ah, no matter, I just pull out a large can of Monster Energy drink and slam that down the hatch.

Then around 7:50am I notice a average size doe coming into my area. She is working her way closer to my clover plot (which is 20yds from my tree). I was watching her through the scope on my vortex. After she made it to the clover she gave me a nice broadside view so I decided to take her. I looked through my scope again, released the safety, and then squeezed the trigger. The arrow hit her high in the right shoulder traveled down through her chest then exited out the left shoulder.

She jumped about 2 feet into the air and crashed down onto her left side. I waited several minutes but she started to get up and move again. This prompted me to do a "first for me" move. I had to put a second arrow into her to put her down for good. I was finally able to get down to go start dressing her out. When I lift "her" head I was in for another first. I ended up shooting a button buck. I was kind of bummed because I don't personally like to do that to them. The up side is that he should be very good eats.

I was shooting my Vortex, w/Firebolts and G5 Striker BH. He dropped in his tracks and then stumbled about 15 yds before I finished him.

I had to re-edit for a couple of typos.

We try not to shoot button bucks around where I live but sometimes it just happens. The herd will survive and you get the good eats! :) And I'm with you on the morning hunts, but it's a pleasant 45°F here right now and I'm going out in an hour or so. How do I get to that Tim Horton's Drive Thru? Gary

Congrats on the deer.

Sometimes they can change on ya . . .my brother had the scope on a nice 8 point as it came through the brush. When it hit the clearing, he pulled the trigger on it. It dropped in its tracks. When he got over there, it had turned into a doe.

I think your experience was a little better than his. :)

Congratulations on the deer! I'm still fighting the morning hunt. My trailcam just proved out my point about my favorite stand. 31 pics, 3 different bucks, all late morning and late afternoon. One made a scrape right in front of the camera. Never had that happen before. It's been a great year for my trailcam.
In 21 years I've never seen a deer there at first light or last light. I gave up mornings last year. 8 AM is a good starting time for me.

WOW, I almost forgot to give a big THANKS to Laura for my successful hunt Saturday. I had recently ordered a camo'd Michigan Crossbow Assoc. hat from her, which came in the mail on Friday. When I went out to hunt Saturday morning I swapped it out in place of my usual hat. So I'd have to say that the "new" hat brought me some luck. :D :D
