ordered a bowie knife for field dressing deer

Post by wabi »

Finally found the knife I've been looking for and ordered it today.
A genuine bowie style!
But just a tad smaller than the originals.

I bought the wharncliffe model this summer and found it's very useful despite the small size. I figured the bowie style blade just might be handy for field dressing, so I'm getting one to try.

Specs:
Overall Length: 5.13"
Blade Length: 2.12"
Blade Thickness: 0.108"
Blade Material: 5Cr15MoV (Stainless)
Blade Rockwell: 55-57HRC
Handle Material: Micarta
Weight: 1.60 oz.
Sheath: Kydex
Sheath Weight: 0.50 oz.

The only modification I made was to replace the paracord lanyard on the neck sheath with 1/16" (2mm) elastic shock cord tied so it could release if it snags on something (like in a fall).
I can wear it as a neck knife and forget it's there it's so small/light, but it provides a secure fit when I grip it.

I'm currently using a Puma Rattler for field dressing and it works fine, just had an urge for something new/different.

I bought the wharncliffe blade style of the same knife this summer for camping use.

I've carried & used it a few times when camping and so far it seem to be good quality, just not a blade style I prefer for field dressing game. It came from the box with a reasonably sharp blade.

Got the new bowie today! :D

To give you an idea of the size I took a pic -
bowie.JPG
It was sharp out of the box, but I'm never happy unless I can shave with a blade. I hit it 15-20 strokes on each side on the fine diamond stone, a few passes on the crock stick, and then finished with a few strokes on the razor strop.
It'll shave now. :D

Now I'll have to find a deer to try it out on.

Yes.
I already have the wharncliffe style blade in that model. The knife is made to hold in the joints of your fingers, and fits my hands very well. It should work great for the cutting up inside the body cavity of a deer. I usually just open 'em up from the pelvis to the sternum then reach up inside and cut everything loose. With the new shoulder length plastic gloves I can do it that way and never get blood on my shirt. :D
Somehow always manage to get blood on my pants legs, though.

That's actually a dry skin condition the doctor put some fancy name to and prescribed some high dollar ointment to cure. The ointment worked fine on the spot on my leg, but I still haven't figured out how a working man can survive with greased hands.
