you temporarily stunned him by impacting the spine but not cutting it. if you get hit hard and direct in the back like when playing football your legs will fall out from under you instantly, you will also take awhile to stand up. thats all that happened and i think anyone would have been fooled the same way, i know i would have probably taken my time thinking i could easily get another arrow in him.
