First notch on the Excal, and for me.

Post by Milli Benelli » Thu Dec 23, 2010 12:16 pm

After having no luck with 6 or 7 morning hunts the last couple weeks I decided to try an afternoon/evening hunt on Monday. I arrived at my stand at about 1:20pm and threw out a bag of carrots and apples for good measure. I sat for two and half hours with really no hope of seeing anything again but all of a sudden I see a doe coming through the woods about 100yds out, then another and another. 4 does in total came down the trail. My crossbow was resting on the railing of the stand and I slowly inched towards it and picked it up as they made their way closer to my stand. I could feel my heartbeating in my TOQUE!!! The first doe, the largest, kept sniffing the air and on 3 occasions made eye contact with me as I stared down the scope. Thankfully the wind was on my nose today. She walked closer and turned broadside. So with her at 40yds I could wait no longer and let the arrow fly. All four deer scattered like a flash and I could not tell whether I hit her or not. I waited 10 mins to climb down and packe up my gear with trempling hands. I walked to the contact site and saw the prints and two big clumps of hair. I though "Ahhh crap I just nicked her". I found my arrow and the broadhead was wide open, covered in fat and blood with a feather half peeled back. I looked about 5yds in the directon she fled and the blood trail was absolutely mind-boggling. It stretched into the woods like I never would have imagined it. The doe made it about 50-60yds. As my buddy told me "When the shooting stops, the work starts". Right he was.

I had to drag her about 750yds out of the woods to the car. About halfway back I decided to lighten the load and gut her in the woods. Seeing as it was my first deer I'd never gutted one before so here I am in the middle of the woods kneeling next to my deer watching how-to videos on youtube on my iPhone. My wife had tears in her eyes when I told her that. I think I did a great job too, didnt' damage any meat. It was dark by the time I got mo my car..............yes CAR. A Honda Civic Hatch. Not a good choice as a hunting truck. Loading that deer into the car was a challenge but I got it in there, home, and hung in the garage.

Used an Excal Equinox, Carbon Firebolts and Grim Reaper broadhead. This was my first shot at a deer. I`m very excited and must say the Excal and Grim Reapers exceeded EVERY expectation I ever had.

Thanks very much for letting me take you on my journey.

Congrats! Nice looking deer. It will look even better in the freezer. Got to love the equinox, great choice. :D First deer of many I would bet.

Hey way to go on the first one!

I am right there with ya. I am still waiting to drop one this year, but when I do it is going to have to get crammed into the trunk of my Toyota 4 door with all the hunting krap that has been living in there since October! Good job on gutting it yourself! I was lucky enough to have a friend show me how to do it when I went along with him in the states last year, and it helps a lot when someone can "show you the ropes." I think I still need help though...I am afraid I am going to end up eating tag soup on Jan 1
