Excal Equinox kills wild pig

Post by mchurch »

December 26 2010 I had the opportunity to hunt wild pigs with Alfred Luis of Central Coast Outfitters. This is my third hunt with Alfred. All of them have been with my crossbow as my primary weapon and the last two I had my Browning X-bolt in 300 wsm as a back up. I met Alfred at the ranch house at 5:30 am and we got our gear ready and set off for hogs. Alfred took us to spots that regulary has hogs and before long we spotted a group of eight or so. We stopped the truck and cocked the crossbow and the hogs, which were roughly 200 yards away, scurried down a hill. When we got to the edge of the hill we could see them rooting around. They seemed largely unconcerned about our approach. At one point on the stalk they got skittish but quickly settled down. Alfred had binos with ranging capabilities and told me the hogs were 23 yards away. I put the 20 yard crosshair of my Excalibur Equinox crossbow on one of the hogs and let it fly. The hog dropped in its track and let out the loudest squeals I have ever heard. He didn't get up and just kept kicking his legs. I spined him. I went over to him and put another Swhacker into him and ended that. We went the rest of the day seeing more than 30 hogs but none were within range. At the end of the hunt we were near the ranch house when we spotted a young hog in one of the horse corals. We got within thirty yards and I put a 165 grain copper bullet through him. He ran 20 yards and toppled over. This is my third hunt with Alfred and I have gotten one or more hogs every time in one day. The pigs weren't the biggest but they should be excellent eating. He's not the cheapest guide, but with his track record and his work ethic, in my opinion it is well worth it.

Good stuff, they look like furry buggers there.

I assume the arrow is the first shot?

I live in California. Central Coast Outfitters is Near Jalama Beach roughly one hour north of Santa Barbara. The guide also owns an Excal and has hunted successfully with it. Matt

Not innapropriate at all. The first pig was 650 and the second pig was 550. A very expensive day to say the least. Out here it can be very difficult to find a guide who will take a crossbow hunter. He has one fine piece of land and pigs on public land are extremely scarce.

No offence, but that is a crazy price to pay for a pig! They must be scarce where you are.
