Very Green Newbie

Post by PensFan »

Just wanted to post and say thanks already!

Just recently started my research as I am in the market for my very 1st xbow. Must say everything I read [on here and elsewhere] and heard from store where I'm gonna purchase [thanks Jim], it is a no-brainer on the brand I'm getting. Excal is second to none in all categories!!

There was 1 condition from the better half on getting my xbow.......she gets 1 too! What can I say to that! :)

I'm leaning towards a Phoenix for me and a Vixen [not the pink 1 tho] for her.......thoughts, suggestions?! Main uses are gonna be deer, turkey and likely yotes.

So......thanks to everyone for the knowledge they have shared, it is very much appreciated, especially for a newbie like me!

Looking forward to sharing what I can, when I can!

Well you picked a good site for getting the right information. Besides you can't be all bad if you're a Pens fan even though you may hear from the guys and gals north of us :) . Both picks are good. Both are great bows for target and hunting. I picked a Vortex because I liked the stock, its a little shorter bow and 200 draw weight. It all comes down to a personal pick. Either way you really can't make a mistake. You'll just buy a couple more - thats all. :D

Welcome one newbie to another  I just put my Ibex together and practiced cocking and uncocking, not bad with the cocking aid.
I did alot of research also which is reason I ended up here.

Welcome. You can't go wrong with your choice in Excal. Both are great choices, I bought a set of Excals for the wife and I and went with the Exocet for me and the Phoenix for her. The Exocet seemed like a perfect choice for me, plenty of speed but not a gut buster when cocking.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!

To answer the arrow, BH selection question - to start I will likely get the package that comes with the bow - 6 firebolt arrows & the 150 grain boltcutter BH's. Any other suggestions for deer? turkey? Yotes? Or is this BH/arrow good for any?

For your choice of bows, any excalibur bow would be great for your usages. I would suggest that you go to your local store and handle the different models. Shoulder then and see what model fits you best.

Even though you are a Pens fan, I will not hold it against you LOL

The arrows you get in the packages will be more then enough for you. They are a good arrow and head combo. As for the future, you will probually try other heads when you get into a tinkering mode (but many stay with those heads). As for what to use for turkeys, if your comfortable with the heads you use for deer hunting and they are accurate, then stay with them. I would only suggest you add an arrow arrestor to the arrow to stop pass throughs (with the arrow inside the bird, it has a difficult time running or flying).

Hope this helps.
