Bob;
I drilled and then used the tablesaw to take the bulk of the wood out. Needed to drill you know because of the closed end.

From the begining. After the blank is size down to straight and square (which takes a jointer, tablesaw, and planer) I lay out the rail pocket. I drill it on the closed end of the rail with a 1.25 forstner bit and than run the rest out on a table saw. The neat little box on top of the blank on the drill press is a digital angle gauge. This lets me know if I am drilling straight down. Here are some pics;Image

Now two layout the two stocks. I just use a excalibur as a pattern. The screwdriver points show the two points that you have to follow. I make the rail 3" deep so it gives me room for a raised cheek at the butt end. So you see the rail rules all the measurements. The line through the length of the blank is where I am going two bandsaw the blank in two being careful not to hit the stock chalk.

The rail cut is 3" deep because it lowers the whole stock that way so I have ample room for the cheek piece. Pics show blank being run through bandsaw cutting off excess wood. And the others are all the tools I use for clean and forming the stock for the rail. Chisel sand paper and my favorate electric carving tool with all the bits. That carver is well worth the investment. Cost (Don't ASK)
