Testing new fletching... oops!

Post by houser52 »

I fletched some old 2117 vbow arrows. 3 with Blazer vanes and 3 with 3" feathers in order to see if there was any difference in the way they fly.
Shot a tight little group at 20 yards then moved the target back to 30 yards. I alternated every other shot with feather, then Blazer, etc. On the last shot I heard the sound of metal on metal. I thought, good group with the arrows touching.

Here's what I found when I got to the target...

First robin hood with my new Vortex!
I'll have to change the way I aim when testing them with broadheads. :D

Looks like those Blazers like each other.

As they say: "It takes two to tango", and that is why I only shoot one arrow at a time. I'll leave the "robin-hoods" to those with more dollars than sense. :P

I'd heard all you guys say not to shoot at the same spot more than once. I'm a believer now. That's the reason I was shooting "old" arrows and not my new XX75 2117 Camo Hunters. I'm saving them for hunting.

Before shooting for groups today I'd only shot the Vortex getting the scope sighted in, checking the velocity through the chrono and just messing around. I'd about made up my mind to use feathers all the time because they were a wee bit faster but looks like the Blazers had the same POI as the feathers at 30 yards. I'll have to do a lot more shooting to see how they compare at 40 - 50 yards.

The double-Robin-Hood shot by Bob Morgan especially impressive. Morgan, a pro shooter for Carbon Express, was warming up for an ASA shoot in London, Kentucky. Shooting from a distance of 35 yards, Morgan center-punched the bull with his first arrow, then shot twice more at the same spot. After the 3rd arrow, Morgan noticed that the final shaft seemed to be dangling from the target. When he walked up to the butt, he realized he’d shot a double-Robin. An awesome feat from any reasonable distance, but at 35 yards, truly remarkable.

Nice group shootingyou did.

Great group. Fun to look at but.... I too no longer 'shoot for groups.' Found out the hard way: a cracked plastic nock went undetected resulting in a bow self dissembling. Ouch!~
Don't shoot plastic nocks any longer either. :)

I inspected all the other nocks and luckily all were intact.

Hopefully I'll get to shoot some more late this evening if it's not too hot. Supposed to be 95 today and higher the rest of the week.

they shoot nice at 50 yards , i practice regularly with them , i prepare bolts to shoot accurate at longer ranges 5 inch vanes good foc etc , youll be pleasantly surprised , for hunting i use a heavier setup to maintain those joules at longer ranges youll be pleasantly surprised

I reckon you could call that a nice tight group!!
Gonna get exspensive if you keep it up though.

I got to shoot some more out to 50 yards late yesterday. The groups weren't as tight as they were at 30 yds. but not by much.
One thing I noticed when shooting at 50 yds. was that the arrows with feathers were impacting lower than the arrows with Blazer vanes even though the feathers were 5 fps faster through the chronograph. I guess the Blazers have a better ballistic coefficient than the feathers.
Man, these Blazers are starting to look like what I'll be using to hunt with and to think I didn't even want to try them. :D Now I'll have to see how accurate they are with broadheads.

Do a lot of you use Blazers with fixed blade broadheads? (Slick Tricks)

Don't use feathers in the rain. Then it's plastic time. :)
I am a hunter and proud of it.
