What is the best bolt / mechanical broadhead combo?

Post by Shake PA-C »

I am in my 2nd year with hunting with my Excalibur Vortex. I like the idea of using a mechanical broadhead. What is the best bolt / mechanical broadhead combo? I have the carbon Firebolts.

I have a vortex with firebolts and Rage 2 125 grain, deadly accurate and nothing makes a blood trail like a rage 2 blade.

Yeah the only thing is 2'' cutting diameter is a little much unless you have a really heavy bolt, you're within 20 yards, or you are hunting the anorexic deer Florida has to offer

Rage 3 blade has exceded my expectations with 7-8 deer kills.

Have used the Beman thunderbolt and Rocket sidewinders ( 1.5 in dia. ) and Rocket hammerhead ( 2 inch cut ) this head is the same as the Stricknine less the pathfinder / Chisel point . Both have been accurate and deadly from my Exocet.

Not really . . .I use the Stricknines, a 2" cut, three blade on a Easton Powerbolt . . .total weight is 408 grains. I've zipped it through a 180 pound deer like it was nothing out of my Exomax at 40 yards.

Blood trail . . .have not had to trail one after hitting them with the three blade 2" cut broadhead. Just watch them drop and go dress them.

I was initially shooting a 380 grain total weight . . .still dropped the deer, but, I did not get a complete pass.

There are other factors involved . . .but, overall, I have been extremely pleased with the Stricknines. Vortex and Grim Reaper also have some 3 blade 2" cut broadheads that are worth a look.

The deer really do drop . . .it's amazing . . .I wish they had a 4 blade . . .I'd gladly give up a little speed for more cutting . . .I don't like long tracking jobs.
I'd rather wear out than rust out.
Perception trumps intention.

Thinking of trying Trophy Ridge Sidewinders this season.
I used mechanicals in the past (Wasp JakHammers) but ran into problems with blades deploying in flight when single banded or not deploying at all when double banded.
I've been using fixed blades for a couple years now with great results, but replacement blades for the brand I like are hard to find. :(
I bought a pack of Sidewinders to test, and so far they seem to work as they should (closed in flight, open when they hit). I'm thinking the 1 1/2" cut should give reliable pass-throughs on deer from my Phoenix, and after successfully killing several deer with a 1 1/8" cut mechanical the 1 1/2" cut should seem like a huge advantage.
