Are we considered diehards?

Are we considered diehards?
A lot of guys/girls hunt. Some talk shop once in a while. Some only think about hunting when they have their 2 weeks off during gun/deer season. But we seem to be a different breed. We all seem to have that undying passion, that eternal flame that says to the rest of the world "I am a hunter."
I don't hunt currently but did from 1969 to 1995.
If you count club/target stuff, I am a "diehard".
I spent from 9:00 this morning to 4:00 this afternoon helping to get the club's 3D course ready for tomorrow. We'll (work party) be there very early tomorrow to set up and we will be the last to leave after takedown of the course.
I help with the 3D and archery program and help run the trapshooting there which goes year round, the trap runs every weekend except when there's a 3D shoot. It is a comittment.
I guess I could be a diehard of sorts.

I'm not sure if I would get bored. For me part of hunting is just getting out there and exploring. Seeking new territory, previously unseen, unknown. Taking in all the different critters that inhabit the forest, seeing how they live. For every hill that I crest, every barrier I cross, I answer that question "what if?". I would love to have the time to just walk, for days on end, and walk where perhaps no one has walked in a hundred years or, maybe, ever.
To come across animals that look at you and have no fear because they have never seen a human before. I had this happen once and it was a real neat experience. I was still hunting for deer four miles from the nearest road, when a noticed a fox walking towards me. I wasn't in full camo, he obviously knew I was there, a mere ten feet from me. He stopped. Turned around and began to walk the other way, I pursed my lips and gave my best mouse squeek. He turned around and came closer. Stopped, and headed off. Again I gave a mouse squeek, he turned around again, and came closer. A third time, he came back. Then I let him walk, 45-70 would have made a big mess. But I'm sure he had never seen a human before.

To be honest, there isn't a day that goes by when I don't think about deer hunting with the crossbow....it is always a prevailing thing on my mind.
I usually jump into things with both feet and burn out or tire of it after a few years. I did it with handguns, then small game hunting, now it's bowhunting. This is WAY worse! I don't think I'm going to tire of this game anytime soon.
If I could actually HUNT every day, I'm certain I would get bored of it within a few months. It's the nine months of planning, preparation and anticipation that makes the hunting season all the more enjoyable.

Same here LoneWolf but the poll stated hunting so I think I would get bored, However you-all I would never get bored of being in the woods , watching all type of wildlife , and the sounds of running water, birds singing, bears growling, hogs grunting, bug's biting and the fishing if'n there is a stream, lake or river around so if the poll means getting in the woods everyday I would be a die hardLoneWolf wrote:I don't think I can ever get bored of being out in the woods...

Been there, done that..
When I first retired I hunted every day. Come rain shine, snow wind , whatever..
On a cold, windy and sleet hitting me in the face December day I faced facts. I had made WORK out of hunting. ARRRGGGHHH! From then on I decided to hunt when I wanted to and not to just get hunting hours in. Now, if I wake up and the wind is howling or it is raining cats and dogs, the wind chill is in the single digits I roll over and go back to sleep. UNLESS it is RUT time, then I go no matter what..
If you cant enjoy it, why do it??

I hunt alot (ask my wife) and it must be the right amount because when I am out it is one of the few times I can honestly say that the terrible four letter word "work"! has never once taken over my thoughts or concentration. It is truely a great escape for me!

I agree with Quickshot I never get tired of being in the bush. It's the most invigorating place I can be. I find a great deal of enjoyment just wandering, looking at tracks and watching wildlife. It's a great place for working out problems or for re-creating yourself. Some of my best sleeps have been under pine trees with the wind blowing through the branches. Hunting is so much more then harvesting game. I would never grow tired of hunting.

Bored of hunting? NEVER!!!!!!!!
Bored with killing game, not really bored, but don't do it frequently! But, the kill isn't all there is to the hunt. Just being able to "count coup" on the quarry is frequently enough for me. I've passed up countless shots because I had no need for the meat, skin, or other parts of the animal and I do believe strongly in taking only what I will use. Kinda like the old "waste not - want not" saying. It's still a thrill to get within range, get into position to take a shot, and know I could have easily killed the quarry - even if I choose to let it live for another day. I was out looking for deer this past week. I have a freezer full of meat and no tags left, but I still love to get out there.
