Don't Do This!

Post by OkXbowHunter »

Perhaps some of you noticed in this picture that my string cocker was still attached to my string. I normally leave it on after hunting. This way, when I go hunting again I don't have to look for my stringer and it's ready to cock in the dark.

Image

Well, the other day after letting it down and taking the string off so I could lube the string, I noticed that my string was closer to the bottom line. I found this odd as I prefer it to be in the middle or toward the upper line (the one nearest the trigger).

No biggie I thought.

So tonight when I get done hunting, I let the string down and take the stringer off because I'll be bringing it inside for some routine cleaning. The first thing I noticed was that the string was touching the bumpers on my STS system. I know that I had intentionally left a gap just a few weeks ago. I then noticed that the string is not only touching the bumpers, but it's resting right over the lower line!

Apparently leaving your stringer on the string between hunts will cause it to stretch. And it can stretch more than I thought!! The string is an older one I"ve been using since last year.

So don't keep your stringer attached to the string!

I have left mine on for extended periods of time and never had an issue.
Was it kept in a warm environment?

I leave mine on all the time too. Is it a problem to keep your cross bow strung all year or should it be unstrung in the off season?

I have always left mine on each vixen of the two I own ,never that problem, must be a soft string problem, I have left mine on in a closet for months with no problem. If this happened,I would change the string. Could be strength of the limbs contributing to this. Vixens are all I'll ever need. One Vixen has shims making it 175 lbs. :|

That's odd? I leave my cocker on like that 24-7 and have never had an issue with the string moving. :?

The stretch may be from it being cocked under a full load for long periods while hunting is my guess just but a couple of twist in and you are good be thankful it is not a compound bow then you would have a problem.

Yeah, I plan on giving it a twist or three later on today.

The string (it's an Excal FF) probably has between 800 and 1000 shots through it as I put it on at the beginning of last season and I've practiced with it all year long. Left the bow strung over the Summer months.

It could have gotten hot in my truck a day or two recently when the temps crept up near 90.

I really need to run up to BPS and get another one and get it on and use this one as a backup I guess.

I'd guess that may be the problem.

Thats normal here. The warmer temperature definately does it with or without a stringer. Its a hassle but at least its an easy fix.

I may do that if BPS is out of them. I live 15 minutes from the one in Broken Arrow.

I'd like to get a FF for my Vixen, so I'll give him a call and see what he can do since I'm not in a hurry for that one.
